Conan O'Brien takes Conan show to Cuba

Conan O’Brien spent the long Presidents’ Day weekend in Havana, Cuba, where he filmed a special episode of his late-night talk show Conan.

The red-headed comic posted to his Twitter account on February 16, 2015 that he had spent the previous four days shooting footage for his TBS show all around the city of Havana for an upcoming special called “Conan In Cuba,” airing on March 4, 2015.

On Tuesday night’s episode, which saw O’Brien back in the States, the host revealed a photo of himself in a white linen suit joining in with some colorfully clad street performers in the streets of Havana in what he swears was not a staged moment. Check out the photo here below of Coco dancing in the streets, as well as one of him posing in front of a car, along with his posts to social media and a video of him talking about the experience.

O’Brien had taken a small crew down to Havana on Thursday and spent the next four days filming for the planned special nearly around the clock. When recounting the trip, the talk-show host said it was one of the best experiences of his life. Judging just by the two photos shown, it’s not surprising that he would feel this way about visiting such a beautiful, picturesque city.

Deadline confirmed that the Conan special is “intended to give O’Brien’s audience a rare glimpse into Cuban daily life.” The “Conan In Cuba” episode will mark the first time an American late-night television show was filmed in Cuba since the U.S.-imposed embargo against the country began in 1962. (In 1959, Jack Paar had interviewed Fidel Castro for The Tonight Show, a move which was criticized by some at the time, especially as it was during the height of the Cold War.) In January 2015, U.S. President Barack Obama asked Congress to begin lifting the embargo against Cuba. Travel by U.S. citizens to Cuba has been extremely limited since the 1960s and was only expanded slightly in 2011 to allow more visitors there, but the restrictions still remain harsh, hence why the Conan special will deliver an experience that most of us here in the U.S. have never witnessed. (I just want to say, that the embargo was in place long before I was born and the way things were when I was growing up, I never thought it’d be lifted in my lifetime, so this is a major milestone happening right now. I’m really looking forward to seeing the “Conan In Cuba” special.)

Since President Obama’s announcement last month that the U.S. will be working to ease sanctions against the communist Caribbean country, new anchors like CBS’ Scott Pelley, NBC’s Brian Williams, and ABC’s David Muir have made special trips to Cuba for their respective news programs, but O’Brien’s visit was the first for a late-night talk show host in nearly half a century.

The “Conan In Cuba” special airs on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 at on TBS.
