Welcome to the next two chapters in the Vikings Season 3 webisode series, Athelstan’s Journal. “Chapter 8: Gods and Men” delves deeper into the devotion of these men to their gods and whether it is a selfish devotion or not. And then there seems to be an entirely new journal, for the just-released video “Stones and Bones Chapter 1: Vows,” where Athelstan seeks out the seer for answers.
Watch the two webisodes here below.
The series explains aspects of viking life through the eyes Athelstan (George Blagden), the slave turned BFF of Ragnar Lothbrok (Travis Fimmel).
In Athelstan’s journal “Chapter 8: Gods and Vows,” Athelstan ponders, “Is it our earthly appetites that rule us, or our aspiration to the heavens? My yearning to understand exceeds my grasp.” He observes all of this war and “god(s)speak that talks a good game of being in line with the goal of going to Valhalla or heaven (whichever you prefer), but the treachery and backstabbing just seems to serve the god of greed. Athelstan’s real problem is that he “serves too many masters.”
“Stones and Bones Chapter 1: Vows,” a shorter 2-minute video, collides the two very different Seer (John Kavanagh) and Athelstan belief systems. The Seer says, “You think you are confused. The gods have not yet begun to toy with you. Any of you… Some vows will remain sacred. Others will be broken.” Ominous much?
