Bill & Ted’s Triumphant Return #1 is a comic that I’ve been waiting for since 1991! When we last left Bill and Ted, they had just won the San Dimas Battle of the Bands, and were on their way to musical greatness and changing the world as we know it. And, they lived happily ever after, right? Not so fast….
BOOM! Studios got writer Brian Lynch to tackle the, well, triumphant return of Bill and Ted, and they couldn’t have made a better choice. This comic truly captures the spirit of the Bill & Ted films, and moves the story along a natural path to what would happen next. And Lynch managed to find a logical place for all the characters that we loved in the movie: The good robot versions of Bill and Ted, The Princesses, Station, The Grim Reaper, and everyone else. With a cast so big, you’d think that someone would get lost in the shuffle, but thankfully, none of them do.
Penciler Jerry Gaylord transports us to the world of Bill & Ted flawlessly. Everything looks like it should, straight from the movie. Gaylord does a good job with likenesses without using publicity stills or photo references, and he even perfectly renders the future fashions that Rufus and others wore in the movie. He also manages to convey some great comedy and fun through his artwork. A job very well done.
As you can probably tell, I’m a huge fan of Bill & Ted, so I was maybe a little predetermined to like this book. But, I was presently surprised by how GREAT this book is on a technical level. Not picking up this book would be totally bogus!
This title was also a pick by Empress Eve Geeks Of Doom weekly comics pull list The GoD List.
