Last week’s Once Upon A Time went into Cruela De Vil’s (Victoria Smurfit) history. At first we thought her a victim of her mother’s cruel imprisonment. We were fooled and so was the author. That was the twist I mentioned last week. The entire time we were completely taken in. That’s the way of fairy tales, no? The beautiful damsel with the terrible life is a victim of cruel yet uglier people. After giving her the power to control animals, he countered her cruelty by rendering her unable to take a life. Emma (Jennifer Morrison), not knowing that, was orchestrated into killing her, in order to save Henry. Regina (Lana Parilla) grabbed heart leverage in order to be able to save Robin (Sean Maguire) without Gold (Robert Carlyle) sending out a warning.
Once Upon A Time 4.20 “Lily” review: Quite the exciting episode! Regina and Emma go on a road trip – Emma, to find Maleficent’s (Kristin Bauer van Straten) daughter Lily, Regina – to save Robin from Zelena’s (Rebecca Mader) clutches. It has been really fun to see The Evil Queen be the voice of reason lately. Fans of TV are fans of complex characters, but it is more fun watching Regina be good, then Emma or Snow turn dark.
Emma and Lily have been connected forever. The flashbacks show their falling out, and how Lily’s life is enmeshed in darkness. Every decision she makes leads her down the wrong path, made better only when she is with Emma. We all know that it is Prince Charming and Snow White’s (Josh Dallas and Ginnifer Goodwin) fault. They go to Maleficent to try to make amends. She’s not having it though. Neither is Lily – like mother, like daughter. She knows everything and wants revenge on Emma’s parents.
Gold partners with Will Scarlet (Michael Socha), Belle’s (Emilie de Ravin) new boyfriend, to steal her heart back from Maleficent. They are successful, but her heart will always belongs to Gold. We all know that.
They do make it to Robin’s place and the Marian/Zelena scam is revealed, but now there is a new twist. Yep. Saw that one coming.
Great line from Regina: After seeing a dirty apartment building hallway,”Why did I go through the trouble of creating Storybrooke, when I could have cursed everyone to live here.” She’s right.
Always happy when Sean Maguire is in the episode, but Colin O’Donoghue is still getting a paltry amount of lines that are just supportive boyfriend blurbs. I’m glad Hook and Emma are together, but if they need to break up in order for Hook to have a juicy storyline, so be it. He was more fun as a rapscallion anyway.
Once Upon A Time airs Sunday nights at 8pm ET on ABC.
