Pitch Perfect 2

Pitch Perfect 2 sees the return of Becca (Anna Kendrick), Fat Amy (Rebel Wilson) and the rest of the Barden Bellas singing their way to the world championships after being stripped of their US title thanks in part to a very public wardrobe malfunction. Standing in their way are the German a cappella Champions Das Sound Machine (DSM) lead by Kommissar (Birgitte Hjort Sørensen) and Pieter Krämer (Flula Borg) whose team are the epitome of perfection.

We were recently invited the film’s press day were we had a chance to sit down with fellow journalists to talk to newcomers Sørensen and Borg about the auditioning process, improve, dancing, and more. Check out the full interview below.

Geeks Of Doom: In addition to the singing, you also had to do choreography, what was you physical preparation?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen: In general it’s a good idea to stay in shape when you’re an actor. We went through a two-week boot camp, all of us, not just learning the choreography, but also increase the stamina to do it over and over again.

Flula Borg: That’s true. During lunch, I would do the Running Man for six minutes.

Geeks Of Doom: When you first auditioned for the role, did you guys have to do chemistry readings?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen: No. We auditioned separately. Fingers crossed I guess. Whew.

Geeks of Doom: Being newcomers to the franchise, how well received were you to the already established cast?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen: We knew it was a big thing because there was a lot of expectations, because the first one was so popular. Furthermore we are entering into a family that was already there. But they are very welcoming to us. Because we are the littlest in the sense, the function is so clear. It was fairly easy for us to step into. They we’re sweet.

Geeks of Doom: Would you guys like to pursue a career in Hollywood?

Flula Borg: Of course! I love anything performance and entertainment. I like playing guitar in the subway. I like eating waffles in my bedroom, and filming it. This is just another branch of that.

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen: Definitely. I’ve done a couple of things before, and I am going to do a show for HBO in New York, so I am definitely excited about that.

Geeks of Doom: Could you talk a little bit more about that?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen:: It is an untitled Rock and Roll project, so I might actually get to sing, I don’t know yet. It is about the music industry in the 70s, and Martin Scorsese directed it. We did the pilot in the summer, and Mick Jagger is producing. Terry Winters is writing. I am terribly excited.

Geeks of Doom: Could you talk about the improv, did you get a chance to do any or did you stick to the script you were given?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen: We would usually do a couple of takes as scripted, then we were allowed a lot of freedom. Flula especially, which was a lot of fun. There was a lot of sense of freedom, and we were allowed to contribute with what we felt was lovely.

Flula Borg: We got to play a lot, which was cool.

Geeks Of Doom: Flula, how easy was it to do the role in a German accent, and how easy is it go get any roles with the heavy German accent?

Flula Borg: I thought this was a hoax. I received an e-mail saying there was a role in Pitch Perfect [2] for me, and it’s German, and for sure I thought it was double-triple-quadruple fake. And to realize that I can amplify my Germanity a little bit, and they are like “GREAT.”

Geeks of Doom: How easy is it to have a German accent in Hollywood?

Flula Borg: You realize that you are either perfect for the role or the absolute worst person for the role. Like “looking for a cowboy,” yeah not going to happen; looking for a German man wearing tights and lederhosen and mesh and singing Fall Out Boy, sign me up.

What was it like to be directed by Elizabeth Banks?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen: Elizabeth [Banks] is a very clear director, she knows what she wants, which makes it very easy to be an actor on her set because she will tell you what is working and what is not. She is very comfortable in the role. She also allowed for a lot of freedom, and as an actress it is really wonderful when you can actually be a part of the creative process and not just fulfill somebody else’s vision, so I felt like the perfect combination of guidance and freedom.

Flula Borg: I think it helps that she comes from acting as well. She kind of knows hot to communicate to us very clearly.

The process of creating the confrontational scenes, what was that like?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen:: I think we all enjoyed it a lot. We all enjoy confrontation, especially in this type of film where it’s not like someone is going to murder somebody. I always enjoy the image of a cat dangling a mouse in front of me. And I for one think that Kommissar was attracted to Becca as well. I think we all enjoyed that twisted relationship. And Flula’s character had a strange attraction to Fat Amy.

Flula Borg: No I didn’t… That was very fun, and awkward as well.

Geeks Of Doom: Were there are difficult musical numbers to perform?

Birgitte Hjort Sørensen:: All of them required a lot performances. I would say the world championships were the hardest because the crowd would get bigger because we would start with the tighter shots, and in the end it was 3,000 extras. So of course that requires a lot of takes.

Flula Borg: Also there was fire involved.

Geeks of Doom: Will there be more musical endeavors from you guys in the future?

Flula Borg: I’m releasing an EP about dinosaur DJs, clouds, and a pony who is very confused.

Geeks Of Doom: Could you talk to us about some of your favorite outtakes?

Flula Borg: I had a strange awkward battle with Rebel Wilson about Checkpoint Charlie. It’s very metaphorical and confusing.

Pitch Perfect 2 opens in theaters on May 15.
