My favorite reality competition of all time, So You Think You Can Dance, SYTYCD for short, returned for season 12 tonight, with new judges and a new format. The first episode takes us through the auditions in Memphis and Dallas. Contestants were fighting for their ticket to Vegas on Travis Wall‘s Team Stage, or Stephen “tWitch” Boss‘s Team Street.
We’ve got bunches of really fun and disgustingly talented dancers below.
Let’s give a taste with this miraculous “street” girl, Ladia Yates:

How will the new format of Stage Vs. Street on SYTYCD work? Let’s ask our beautiful host, Cat Deeley…
“Every dancer who turns up to our auditions will have to let us know, whether they’re auditioning for Team Stage or Team Street. Then our judges will decide whether they move on to our callbacks in Las Vegas. By the end of Vegas week, we’ll have two teams and 20 dancers. It’s Team Stage Vs. Team Street. From Vegas on, each team will have a captain to guide and mentor them – two of our most incredible all-stars.”
I’m really glad that street dancers are getting their due. Although these incredible dancers do make the Top 20 and in some cases win, their struggle is much harder than the trained dancers. Having kids in dancing school myself, and shelling out hundreds (and more) for lessons, costumes, and competitions, stage training is mostly only available for middle to high income families. And it’s not fair. So when I see these formally untrained dancers shine better than those who have taken lessons their whole lives, it gets to me.
