Xbox One 1TB Console, New Controller Announced

Microsoft's 1TB Xbox One

One of the biggest flaws with the new generation of gaming consoles—which will have been released two years ago this November—is the amount of space offered on their hard drives. Considering a 20GB HDD seemed large at the start of last generation, the new systems starting at 500GB probably seemed like more than enough. But the games, they are evolving. Rapidly. And 500GB simply is not cutting it.

Microsoft is the first of the two console makers to announce the long-expected new model with more space, a 1TB Xbox One (which technically already exists, if you wanted a special Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare bundle). They’ve also announced a brand new game controller, which features a 3.5mm headset jack. You can see a video of the two new products being announced below.

The console storage space issue is especially true with the Xbox One console. As I and many others discovered only after purchasing the console, to our great horror, the operating system immediately steals around 135GB, leaving users with only a little over 360GB of the advertised 500GB to use. Sony’s PS4 console isn’t much better, leaving only 407GB to those who paid for 500GB of storage. Taking up almost 100GB or more of the amount of storage people paid hard-earned coin for is just not acceptable. But that’s a topic for another discussion.

As many will state, the 1TB HDD and controller with a 3.5mm headset jack are two things that probably should have been part of the deal from the very start. But that’s not how businesses make money now, sadly. Consumer satisfaction always takes a back seat to the green.

The new console a good option if you’ve been holding off on buying an Xbox One—whether it be for better games, more storage space, and so on—but for most who already own one it’s a little too late. Some will happily throw down another few hundred bucks for the extra 500GB, but when most people inevitably require more space, the best plan seems to be to pick yourself up an external hard drive. You can grab an additional 1TB or 2TB of storage for fairly decent prices at Amazon, and if you really play a lot of games and purchase them all digitally, you can even get 5TB or more.

The new 1TB Xbox One will be available beginning on June 16th.
