The first full day of the Hall H festivities started off with its biggest panel of the day for Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II. The film franchise comes to its end later this year, after having grossed over $1 billion at the box office worldwide. The studio has done some brilliant marketing in the past, which is expected to continue until its release.
But today is one of the biggest days to promote the movie, and moderator Conan O’Brien was on hand to talk to director Francis Lawrence, producer Nina Jacobson, and film stars Willow Shields, Liam Hemsworth, Josh Hutcherson, and Jennifer Lawrence about the final half of the final chapter of the series. More on the story below.
Large drum percussion to start panel for The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part II.
Teaser opens with a drill team performing a very elaborate and complicated ceremony in a large hanger, as the ceremony continues we see Katniss in her red suit then walk from the distance as the team forms as walkway for her, and in dramatic fashion it all comes to an end
Nina Jacobson says it has been “emotional for all of us” to bring the franchise to a close. They want to deliver on the motion and politics of the books. She adds it has been tough to bring it all to an end, but assures that it will be emotional for everyone.
Francis Lawrence says that we are getting to see Katniss back in action after being sidelined in the last film, and that it will be some very exciting stuff. Being pleased with the film, he can’t wait to see how the audience reacts to the end of a very successful franchise.
Liam Hemsworth says Gale has been on the sidelines watching the fight happen, but now is a big part of the military plans and how they will attack the capitol. Teaming up with Beatty (Jeffery Wright), they will formulate a plan to storm the Capitol. He joked that there may be a kiss between him and Hutcherson in the film. As for what he would say to Gale if the two were to meet, he said “It’s alright mate, there are plenty of fish in the sea.”
Shield has been an integral part of the entire franchise, being saved by her older sister from participating in the Hunger Games. She says the whole goal for Katniss was to save Primrose, which has since evolved into Primrose taking care of Katniss, but in a more emotional capacity. When asked which District she would like to live in, she responded with 12, because that’s where her character’s roots are.
Hutcherson would be interested in exploring his character’s perspective, but says he’s happy with the fact that the franchise was from Katniss’ perspective.
When asked what she would like to take from the set to bring home, Lawrence said she would be interested in either keeping the wetsuit from Catching Fire or the orange backpack from the first film.
When O’Brien mistakenly called Katniss’s weapon a crossbow, Lawrence then proceeded to school the moderator on the differences between the two, and then talked about the kinds of set bows she used, and was almost tricked into getting a bow she didn’t want because she was so familiar with them. She also said that she and Hemsworth held each other for hours as production for the film came to one final end.
A trailer was then played. The battlefield has changed, with all 13 Districts uniting as one force to stop President Snow (Donald Sutherland). We see Katniss walk through a snowy field towards President’s Snow’s house. Snow assures that the games will come to an end in a threatening voiceover. There are also quick scenes of Katniss and Primrose dancing which then leads into a quick and emotional embrace. Snow anticipating that an attack is, makes his Capitol the last stronghold, and gets fellow gamemakers to line the entire city with booty traps. Finnick jests “Welcome to the 76th Hunger Games.” The trailer then proceeds to show the violent nature of these traps range from hidden armed gunman, flamethrowers, zombie-like creatures, flooding rooms, and collapsing floors. As the trailer comes to a close, were hear Peeta saying that if Katniss successfully kills President Snow, everyone who was a victim of his, their deaths will have meaning. The trailer finally ends with Katniss rallying all the districts together asking them to point their weapons at the Captiol, at President Snow.
