Last night on So You Think You Can Dance, the Top 20 performed once again. But this time, two dancers were eliminated by the end of the show, based on last week’s performances. They had gotten the chance to dance in their own style, to show off what they got. Judges Nigel Lythgoe, Paula Abdul, and Jason Derulo gave constructive criticism of the performances (a bit on the nice side), while host Cat Deeley MC’d the night and encouraged all.
Spoiler alert! The 2 dancers eliminated are announced at the end of this!

Choreographer: Chris Scott & Philip Chbeeb
Dancers: Team Street
Song: “Time” by Nathan Lanier
Whoa… I’m a self-admitted Phillip Chbeeb fan, but even this exceeded expectations. it was like looking into a musical robotic jewelry box. They balanced on see-saws! While dancing! This piece was incredible. Even the slight out of sync (and there were a lot of parts that required synchronization) did nothing to take away from this performance.
Choreographer: Chris Scott
Dancers: Jaja & Jim
Style: Hip-Hop
Song: “No Woman, No Cry” by Bob Marley & The Wailers
Everything Jaja touches turns to gold. Ballet dancer Jim held his own in this hip-hop love story. Although he could not compete with her crispness, I had to force myself to look away from her. It came out strong and lovely. She is not a girly girl, but she made me believe she loved Jim.
Choreographer: Jonathan Platero & Oksana Dmytrenko
Dancers: Hailee, Yorelis, & Darion
Style: Urban Salsa
Song: “Blucutu” by Saamara
So again, skimpy costumes distracted a bit from the fact that these three were not comfortable with this style. I’m a big fan of ballroom styles, especially the latin ones. Yorelis stood out as the best one. Darion and Hailee were ok, but this didn’t do it for me, with the exception of Darion’s leap to Hailee’s back bend.
Choreographer: Ray Leeper
Dancers: JJ, Marissa, & Moises
Style: Jazz
Song: “I’m So Sorry” by Imagine Dragons
The women shined in this one. The strong beat of the song choice was excellent with the choreography. Moises was overshadowed, and did not look strong enough to dance with these two women, which I think will hurt his chances, although technically he was on point. His leaps and splits are beyond compare. Nice save of fixing the prop when the chair was accidentally knocked over. They did not miss a beat.
Choreographer: Nakul Dev Mahajan
Dancers: Gaby, Lily, Burim, & Edson
Style: Bollywood
Song: “Dhol Baaje” by Ek Paheli Lela (Soundtrack)
Bollywood is always a style favorite of mine. These four were very fun and I can’t imagine how difficult it was to dance and drum at the same time for the boys. I was slightly less dazzled though, than I usually am with Bollywood.
Choreographer: Travis Wall
Dancers: Team Stage
Style: Contemporary
Song: “Stabat Mater” by Woodkid
Holy s***! This was just gorgeous. Travis Wall is a crazy talented choreographer – the levels, the lifts, the drops. Chills.
Choreographer: Pharside & Phoenix
Dancers: Top 20
Style: Hip-Hop
Song: “Baila Como Yo” by District 78
Chills again! The Top 20 exceeded our expectations, jumping into the audience, diving through the legs of a hold, and just having so much fun with this number. It was bananas! This is the only talent show I watch and it’s because it is the ONLY one to watch.
Choreographer: Ray Leeper
Dancers: Ariana & Derek
Style: Jazz
Song: “Cry Me A River” by Michael Bublé
Ariana & Derek did a good job with this. I just wasn’t wowed and I don’t think it will be memorable enough for them to not be eliminated next week.
Choreographer: Dee Caspary
Dancers: Alexia, Megz & Virgil
Style: Contemporary
Song: “Until We Go Down” by Ruelle
I was really looking forward to seeing what Megz could do with this as she is one of my favorites. I think the strength of the rest of her stuff will carry her through, but she was not extending her arms and legs all the way through in this. That being said, she really threw her all into it, and looked lovely in the outfit. Virgil was better, but off course Alexia shined in this piece.
Choreographer: Spencer Liff
Dancers: Kate, Asaf, & Neptune
Style: Broadway
Song: “All About That Bass” by Scott Bradlee’s Postmodern Jukebox feat. Kate Davis
I loved this. Kate is divine. I could not drag my eyes away from her. The boys were able to get the spotlight for a mini solo which helped them. This was a sexy little number, that kept me interested throughout, probably hiding the small imperfections.
Darion, Derek, and Moises from Team Stage were in the bottom three, as well as Lily, Ariana, and Neptune from Team Street. This year, people were able to go on Twitter to save two of their faves. It does make the people have more sway in this half of the Top 20. The judges saved Derek and Ariana, while Twitter saved Neptune and Moises.
So sadly, we had to say goodbye to Lily and Darion.
Tonight from 8:00-9:00pm ET, there is a very special So You Think You can Dance in store for us all, as the show celebrates 10 years!
