I miss The Muppets. That variety show styled hit was one of the highlights of my childhood. And with the resurgence of all things Muppets, thanks in no small part to Jason Segel, we get The Muppets back on TV. This time, the format is reality TV, as we get a glimpse into their personal lives.
Watch the almost 11-minute video below.
The video is a show in itself. Elizabeth Banks is in it, dismissed by Kermit as “not famous.” Topher Grace is in it as Miss Piggy’s leading man (“Tophiggy”) both on and off screen. And Fozzie’s girlfriend’s (Margo Harshman) parents do not understand their relationship. The show almost didn’t happen because Piggy refused to do it.
It looks like the show will be a mix of what children and adults can connect to:
Kermit: “Except the band. They’re always happy – legally now.”
Disney is doing what Disney does best. That is just how all of these Disney movies become blockbusters – by appealing to the grownups, while entertaining the kids.
My family and I will be watching.
The Muppets premiere on Tuesday, September 22nd, at 8pm ET on ABC.
ABC’s synopsis:
It’s time to get things started! The Muppets are coming to ABC and this is your first look!
The Muppets return to primetime with a contemporary, documentary-style show. For the first time ever, a series will explore the Muppets’ personal lives and relationships, both at home and at work, as well as romances, breakups, achievements, disappointments, wants and desires. This is a more adult Muppet show, for “kids” of all ages.
Bill Prady (The Big Bang Theory) and Bob Kushell (Anger Management) are co-writers and executive producers. Randall Einhorn (Wilfred), Bill Barretta, Debbie McClellan and Kyle Laughlin are also executive producers. ABC’s new series The Muppets is produced by ABC Studios and The Muppets Studio.
