Last week on Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll, we were treated to the best episode of the season thus far, with Gigi’s (Liz Gillies) mom Cat (Callie Thorne) showing up, and tattoos on everyone’s brains. We learned some new words (my fave is tit-motized), and saw Flash (John Corbett) and Gigi’s budding relationship tested. I have to admit. I was kinda hoping that Cat and Flash would get together, and that Gigi would be fine with it, but that’s not how it ended up. The tattooing was the committment symbol, and a lesson on fathers and daughters. Johnny (Denis Leary) got tattoos to prove his committment to both Ava (Elaine Hendrix) and Gigi. And it’s okay that she isn’t ready, because she’s the daughter.

SDRR 1.7 “Supercalifragilisticjuliefriggingandrews” review: More family = more fun. We meet Johnny’s mom (played perfectly by Kelly BishopGilmore Girls). She has cancer, but that’s a side note. She’s getting married, and wants Johnny’s band to play Billy Joel songs. He springs the Gigi news on her, and she’s intrigued.

The Assassins become a 70s cover band, complete with retro costumes, including Johnny’s authentic “Rod Stewart” hairdo. Ulterior motives revealed quickly, his mom and her new fiance (Roger BartEpisodes, Revenge -in a fantastic turn), are doing a documentary of her life, and want some of the band (not Johnny) to do interviews. Johnny’s dad (Peter RiegerDads, The Mask) is the more caring parent of the two, and tries to be the voice of reason, in the midst of this silly wedding. He contrasts well against Johnny’s mom, who is narcissistic to the nth power.

Some other highlights:

– The new song. I should check if there’s an album (now I’m in the 70s) of the SDRR songs by now.

– Ava in a gold lame jumpsuit. Meow!

– Roger Bart telling off Gigi and Johnny, defending his relationship, via the wittiest way possible.

– Saxophone (watch it – you’ll understand)

– Flash and Johnny hug!!!!

– What Bam Bam (Robert Kelly) will do for food.

– What Rehab (John Ales) will do on Quaaludes.

– Johnny’s mom is convinced Julie F***in Andrews stole the Mary Poppins role from her.

It ends with a poignant scene, and then a scene of pure dirty (I know… oxymoron) comic relief. It’s an “Awww,” then an “Oh!” with open-mouthed astonishment (by both viewers and characters), then giggles (just viewers). Just watch.

Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll airs Thursday nights at 10pm ET on FX.
