In Memory of Wes Craven… Thanks for the Screams… classy move by MTV to open the show.

If you have not watched the Scream finale yet, beware of spoilers!

Tonight is the finale to season 1 of MTV’s newest horror series Scream. This season has been a rollercoaster ride for Emma (Willa Fitzgerald). After high school power couple Nina and Tyler (Bella Thorne and Max Lloyd-Jones) are killed Drew Barrymore style, the town of Lakewood is shrouded in mystery and murder on the 20-year anniversary of the notorious Brandon James massacre. Since the opening, we’ve watched poor Riley (Brianne Tju) bleed out on the roof of the police station, quiet Rachel get hanged, and Will (Connor Weil) get his head split in two. Others like Jake (Tom Maden) and Brooke (Carlson Young), have been wounded. There have been plenty of reveals before tonight’s final titular revelation, what with Emma’s mom Maggie (Tracy Middendorf) being not only Brandon James’ love interest, but actually conceiving his child. Audrey and Noah (Bex Taylor-Klaus and John Karna) are the geeky partners in crime who suspected and aided in the capture of the recently escaped convict, former English teacher Seth Branson (Bobby Campo). Who is/are the killer(s)? My pick from very early in the series was podcaster Piper Shaw (Amelia Rose-Blaire), who’s always there to lend support to Emma, and dropped an ominous hint about her dad being killed when she was two. Branson is still a choice as well, as heartthrob Lakewood newcomer Kieran (Amadeus Serafini). Is it one of the characters no one suspects? Will Emma’s dad play a role? With a second season of Scream announced, do we get a resolution, or a cliffhanger?!?! To the finale!

The killer contacts Emma at the party, and the clues lead to finding Sheriff Hudson. Although Emma continues being the dumbest “final girl” ever, because just like with Will, she stands there while her mom springs a trap that finishes the poor lawman. Well the killer did say it would “gut wrenching.” As the police clean up the scene, guess who shows up? Piper! I gotta say, if she’s not a killer, than kudos to the writers for making her a great suspect. What can she do for Emma? Go check on everyone at Brooke’s party. Where does Noah figure out the killer’s signal is coming from… you guessed it, Brooke’s party.

One the way there, Noah and Emma discuss what may happen:

“If this is the final showdown, the killer’s gonna try to take out all of your friends one by one… because you’re the “˜survivor girl,’ which makes me the know-it-all sidekick… Oh crap I’m gonna die!”

Before they get there, the killer strikes, leaving a kid dead and attacking Audrey. When Brooke returns from the wine cellar, everyone has run off and Branson shows up frantically begging to be let in and calling frame job. When she declines, the lights are off, and the killer is back to give chase. After managing to survive to the finale, Brooke gets super ditzy, and hides in a mini fridge, which of course makes her easy pickings. Noah and Emma pull up and find Piper’s car stained with blood (c’mon it’s too obvious now… right?). When Kieran shows up guns blazing, the three of them (of course) split up. On that decision, Noah,

“I am not in favor of splitting up, nor am I three days from retirement! I will NOT “˜be right back.”

I love how Noah can talk for me. Jake jump scares back into frame, right in time to help the gang save Brooke. Then Audrey leaps back into the frame at Noah, and before you know it we have 6 main characters sitting around, as if a the killer is going to walk up and put on a show for them. Although, Jake does get another great callback to the film, “A landline, what is this 1996?” Then they split up AGAIN, as Emma goes alone inside to call for help. The killer calls Emma while she’s alone in the kitchen, and gets her to come to the docks where Brandon died, because the killer has her mom.

Emma reaches the dock and runs to mom. The killer shows up, pulls off the mask and YES!!! Called that one a mile away.

Piper: “You should see your face Emma, #mindblown.”

Maybe Emma, but not me, Piper Shaw. After the cliche expository villain speech (she was Brandon’s daughter and wanted revenge on mom and half sister), Piper slices and dices, but gets mowed down by Audrey, who showed up with Kieran’s gun. In a throwback to the Craven film, Emma puts a final bullet in Piper’s head because “they always come back for one last scare.”

As Noah narrates us out, having taken over Piper’s podcast, we find out what Piper’s last secret was, as it appears Audrey was her accomplice! Will we find out why? Was it because of the video of her and Rachel? Does that mean Audrey had something to do with Rachel’s death? Ok, I’m both intrigued and confused. There had to be a second killer somewhere, but Audrey seems thrown in for a shock ending.

So the season is over, and “a” killer is dead. I can’t say I’m surprised, as I’ve beat the Piper drum for over half the season. The Audrey reveal will inevitably set up season 2, although I was hoping for it to be a continuation of the “Bi-Curious and The Virgin” show. Scream started great, got a bit contrived, but ended very strong with 4 consecutive good to great episodes to close the season. I liked how this episode followed the path and arc of the original film, almost as if they knew to tribute Wes Craven. Early in the season, Noah joked as to whether a slasher movie could work as a series. After some bumps in the road, the answer is clearly yes. Do I want more gore and less cliche teenage nonsense? Of course. But kudos to Scream and MTV for keeping me thoroughly entertained, and giving me my two favorite TV characters of the summer in Audrey and Noah. Wes Craven managed to make three entertaining Scream sequels. Now it’s up to the Scream show creators to honor his memory in future seasons.

Scream will return with season 2 on MTV in 2016.
