There was rumors that Hulk would be making an appearance in Captain America: Civil War. With William Hurt reprising his role as General Thunderbolt Ross – someone whom we haven’t seen since The Incredible Hulk – and Mark Ruffalo teasing his character’s appearance through a series of Tweets and Tumblr posts, many thought that we would see Hulk join either Team Iron Man or Team Captain America. With the Russo brothers completing principal photography, Marvel didn’t make any new casting announcements, and it started to look more and more like Ruffalo wasn’t being cast or his casting was being kept a secret.
Now, Ruffalo himself has confirmed that Hulk will not be in Captain America: Civil War. But the actor has a rather good explanation as to why Hulk will be noticeably absent in the film. Find out why in the full story below.
In an interview with BadTaste.it (via Coming Soon), Ruffalo has confirmed that he will not be in the film, cameo or otherwise. At first he tells the site there was a great reason as to why he was going to be in the film, but ultimately Hulk was written out of it. Here’s the quote:
“I was in the script but then they removed my character. They don’t want to reveal where is he and why. I don’t even know if Hulk will be back soon.”
For those what don’t know, Ruffalo is referring to the Hulk hiding himself away from The Avengers after the events of Age of Ultron. Because the Scarlet Witch was able to put a hex on him, it was revealed that the Hulk can be considered an uncontrollable danger to the world. And the latter part of the statement could refer to the fact that we won’t be seeing him until later on in Phase III, presumably Avengers: Infinity War Part I and Part II. Which makes sense as Marvel has had a difficult time trying to figure out where to fit a solo Hulk film, and with Phase 3 already planned out, it has been increasingly difficult to find the time to get a solo Hulk film into production.
But that doesn’t mean we should phase out the possibility of him cameoing in other Marvel films. During the press tour for Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ruffalo stated that he had four films left on his contact, which means that if he is in both Infinity War films, we should probably be seeing him make a cameo in at least two more films before Marvel studios Phase 3 finale. As to when we could see him, your guess is as good as ours.
