War of the Planet of the Apes recently added East Los High actor Gabriel Chavarria to the cast. The previous two films had some sort of human antagonist, with Dawn of the Planet of the Apes having one human villain and one ape villain. With the new cast it’s not entirely clear if Jason Clarke will be back to reprise his role, but with the film now focused on the war between the humans and the apes, director Matt Reeves is looking to cast new villains.
A new report says that Woody Harrelson (Zombieland, True Detective) has now joined the cast as a villain. More on the story after the jump.
The Hollywood Reporter says Harrleson would play a character named The Colonel, but could not provide any more details. Based on the name alone the site surmises that he will play the villain in the film, which makes sense.
Reeves, who directed 2014’s Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, will return to direct the third installment of the rebooted Apes franchise, with screenwriter Mark Bomback returning to pen the script.
Harrelson and Chavarria will be joining Andy Serkis who will reprise his role as Caesar, using motion-capture technology to bring the lead chimp to life for a third time. It was previously reported that Chavarria’s character was the lead human, and similar to that of James Franco’s role in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, but THR’s says that his role is actually small, meaning that there could be a good human lead that has yet to be cast or there might not be one at all. But that is just speculation. Previous reports also mentioned that there were two human leads.
Harrelson has appeared in all three Hunger Games films, with the fourth and final one, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 due out for release on November 20. He received critical acclaim for his role in the first season of HBO’s crime drama True Detective, and is currently shooting LBJ, starring as President Lyndon B. Johnson.
Details as to what War of the Planet of the Apes could be about are very limited at the moment, but with war being in the title of the film it is pretty much self-explanatory.
War of the Planet of the Apes will open in theaters on July 17, 2017.
