Game Of Thrones panel Maisie Williams SDCC 2014 - possible Pacific Rim 2 casting

When Universal first announced that Pacific Rim 2 was on the backburner, there was some concern that the film could be cancelled altogether. Director Guillermo del Toro says that he and Zack Penn are currently working on the script and a budget, which will be turned over to the studio in a matter of weeks. But when the studio took it off the 2017 release, and replaced it with Pitch Perfect 3, all hoped seemed lost.

But that isn’t stopping Del Toro from dream casting possible new roles in the sequel. The director took to Twitter recently to talk about how he would like to see Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams in Pacific Rim 2. More on the story below.

Here’s what Del Toro posted to Twitter:

Now it’s not clear if the meeting was specifically about Pacific Rim 2 or the World War II or a crime noir film that Del Toro plans to work on next. But it must have been an incredible meeting to inspire the director to want to cast her in the film.

Pacific Rim 2 was originally scheduled for release on April 7, 2017 before being pushed to August 4, 2017, which was then ultimately taken off the release schedule. Now it may seem like things aren’t going well for the sequel; however, as previously reported, Universal has every intent on making this film happen. In a statement, the studio confirmed that they were delaying the film’s release in part to give time to Del Toro and Penn and the rest of the creative team to perfect the script,

“Legendary and Universal Pictures are committed to having Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to 2013’s Pacific Rim, which generated more $411 million at the global box office, be the vanguard, fully immersive experience that the franchise deserves. To this end, the decision was made to delay the production and release of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team can continue in its efforts to exceed the amazing experience of the first film.”

Many suspect that Universal took Pacific Rim 2 off the docket because of its poor performance at the North American box office. The film grossed $411 million worldwide, doing exceptionally well in China. However, it only grossed $101 million in the U.S., which is more than enough to be of a concern for a big studio like Universal.

Williams will reprise her role in the sixth season of Game of Thrones, and can next be seen in two episodes of series 9 of Doctor Who.

We’ll keep you up-to-date on any Pacific Rim 2 developments as they come.
