Benicio Del Toro has never been one to appear in superhero films, yet he did in last year’s Guardians of the Galaxy, where he played the eccentric Collector, the eponymous collector who lived up to his name by collecting interesting artifacts and life forms from around the universe.
At first it looked like the actor wasn’t going to reprise his role for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with what he has been saying during the press rounds about the possibility of him being in Star Wars: Episode VIII. However a new report says that the actor will indeed be coming back for Marvel’s space opera sequel. More on this story below.
Guardians of the Galaxy actress Zoe Saldana, who played Gamora, confirmed the news in a video posted on Marco Perego Saldana’s Facebook page after seeing Sicario, which Del Toro was in. Now, the size of his role is unknown. The Collector did appear in a post-credit scene for Thor: The Dark World where he is seen obtaining the Aether (aka the Reality Stone), his first Infinity Stone. And he was close to obtaining another Infinity Stone (the Power Stone) in Guardians of the Galaxy before the deal went south thanks in no part to Drax, which ultimately resulted in the stone landing in the hands of the Nova Corps. It is not clear where the Aether is now, but you can be sure that Thanos is going to come after it.
As for the sequel itself, we know very little about it. Director James Gunn revealed that we will finally learn the identity of Peter Quill/Star-Lord’s father, but that it wouldn’t be the same character as it was in the comics. The director admitted that he wasn’t a fan of the name, and added that the theme of the sequel will be family.
But the pitch is apparently really good as hinted by Chris Pratt, who revealed that he cried after learning about what will be in the sequel:
