Despite the big rumor last weekend that Inhumans was going to be cancelled because Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige didn’t want Marvel Television to dictate the rules of the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the studio president got ahead of it by confirming that the rumor was entirely false. The rumor comes fresh off a reported power struggle the studio has been going through with Feige assuming control over the film production side here in the west coast, while Marvel Entertainment CEO Ike Perlmutter oversees the east coast film production and the television division.
But for those who are still unsure that there will even be a film based on Inhumans, Vin Diesel will help ease those fears. According to the actor, there is an opportunity for him to do more things at Marvel beyond saying “I am Groot.” Check out what he had to say below.
Speaking to io9, the actor revealed that he could play another character in the Marvel universe, and that talks of him playing “a character that doesn’t have his voice” are underway. Here’s the full comment,
I can totally be something [else] with Marvel. I think playing [Groot] only makes Marvel that much more excited and me having my experience with Marvel, seeing how great they were, makes me more excited.
We’ve heard a lot of talk about Marvel wanting to have me play a character that doesn’t have my voice. So my voice is used for Groot and my presence is used for the other character.
That last statement just keeps leading MCU fans to believe that Diesel will in fact play BlackBolt. Obviously it is far from a confirmation, but he has played this game before during Guardians of the Galaxy, so it isn’t a complete surprise that he is playfully being coy. The actor knows how to play this game, and will just keep teasing this until he or someone else has confirmed it.
As for what he is alluding to, the character Black Bolt’s “quasi-sonic scream” has devastating effects on his chosen target. But because his ability his directly linked to his vocal cords – as a result of Skrull experimentation – he is forced to take a vow of silence, for even a whisper could rock a battleship, and could destroy an entire planet with used at full power.
For now, it’s unclear when Inhumans could start filming. It currently has no cast or director attached. Joe Robert Cole did write a treatment for the film, but Marvel won’t be using it. Inhumans is scheduled for a July 12, 2019 release.
