Ricky Gervais to host the 2016 Golden Globes

Sure it has been fun to see Tina Fey and Amy Poehler cut loose during the Golden Globes, but after a three-year run, this year’s awards ceremony was to be their last as hosts. They’re a pretty tough act to follow, but the two actually came after Ricky Gervais, who had his own three-year stint at hosting the awards show with his own brand of humor. So how could anyone follow those three up? Well, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) seems to have solved that problem as they have gone back to Gervais, and confirmed that he will be returning to host the Golden Globes in 2016. More on the story below.

The news follows Chris Rock’s confirmation of hosting the 88th Annual Academy Awards.

The HFPA wasn’t exactly subtle when it came to who would be hosting the Golden Globes. Here’s their tweet,

As aforementioned, Gervais hosted the Golden Globes from 2010 to 2012. In between each year he said he would not return to host, only to be seen back on that same stage in Beverly Hills, CA.

Gervais’ brand of humor is definitely cringeworthy at times, and at times it can go a bit too far, causing some to question if our sense of humor is too soft. But that’s what really separates the Golden Globes from the Academy Awards, while some say the former is more relaxed and easy going, while others say that the latter is too uptight and very serious. So there should be no questioning what we will see as Gervais hosts for a fourth time. The HFPA really didn’t have to go too far to find Fey and Poehler’s replacement. I mean if it ain’t broke, why fix it?

So just in case you don’t remember some of his material from the Golden Globes, here’s a small video of his speech from this year’s award show.

But one has to wonder, who else did the HFPA look at before they decided on Gervais? Amy Schumer would have been great, as she isn’t afraid of saying what is on her mind. If not her, then why not make an offer to Will Ferrell or Kristen Wiig, who did a hilarious awards presentation at the Golden Globes two years back.

The 2016 Golden Globe Awards will air live on NBC on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 8pm ET.
