‘Gremlins 3’ Won’t Be A Reboot, Could Follow ‘Jurassic World’ Model

The long-developing third Gremlins film was rumored to be a reboot, and as you can imagine, this didn’t sit well with any of the fans of the franchise. Despite these rumors, actor Zach Galligan says that it won’t be a reboot or a remake, but an actual sequel. And you might have Chris Columbus for keeping the franchise close to his chest and the huge success of Jurassic World to thank for that.

More on the story below.

Galligan recently spoke at London’s Prince Charles Cinema, which had a screening of the 1984 original film, stating, “It’s not going to be a reboot. It will not be a remake in any way, shape, or form.” He added, “Chris Columbus has come out and said that the first film is very near and dear to his heart and as long as he is alive it will never be remade.”

Can a new Gremlins film even create a new generation of fans who will accept the wacky nature of gremlins? While the original movie has a rabid fan base, it’s still not clear if a new film could surpass or even match the success of Jurassic World, the third sequel in the Jurassic Park franchise that was a hit at the box office this past Summer. Galligan mentioned that the sequel could follow Jurassic World model, where it could be considered a rebootquel where it reboots itself but is still a part of the film’s canon,

“So the only thing they will be – and apparently are going to be – doing is something along the lines of like Jurassic World, where it will be 30 years later.”

Considering how people react negatively at the thought of a film reboot (check the Spider-Man film franchises), a rebootquel sounds like a good idea. But just because it sounds like a good idea doesn’t mean it is one. Jurassic World may have been a hit at the box office, but critics weren’t too kind to the film. That being said, a rebootquel for Gremlins 3 would work as it doesn’t need to reestablish the rules or even create new ones; it can work with original characters who can pass off the legacy and mythology of the franchise to new characters. Although, I guess one of the rules they might retool is when you can feed the furry critters considering it is always after midnight somewhere.

As to who could star in Gremlins 3, Galligan wasn’t even sure if he was going to be in it,

“I swear on my life, I don’t know if I’m in it or not, but I think there is probably a decent chance since I’m one of the few people left standing from the first movie.”

We’ll keep you posted on any news regarding Gremlins 3 as it develops.
