To quote Chanel #1, “Listen up sluts!”
FOX has renewed its series Scream Queens for a second season, according to Deadline, which notes that star Jamie Lee Curtis is expected to return.
Scream Queens, starring original “scream queen” Curtis, along with Emma Roberts, Lea Michele, and Abigail Breslin, and more, is a black comedy set Wallace University, where Kappa House is plagued by a serial killer dressed as the school’s mascot, a Red Devil.
Despite receiving mediocre reviews (I loved it), and disappointing ratings (I watched all the time), FOX TV Group chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden are putting their faith into showrunner Ryan Murphy one more time. Murphy, along with collaborators Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, created huge hits for FOX with Glee and American Horror Story (on FX). While Scream Queens’ ratings weren’t too high, they were the number 1 new series on VOD, and also number 1 across social media. Those considerations along with Murphy and friends’ track record on the network got the push for a second season.
Deadline reports that many of the show’s stars signed multiyear contracts, and while only Curtis is promised to return, Lea Michele hinted on Twitter of her return as the twisted serial killer Hester.
Also, it looks like Season 2 of Scream Queens is going the American Horror Story route, in that it will be changing locations from college campus to a hospital full of interesting patients. AHS, which just finished its 5th season on FX, changes venues every year, starting with Murder House, and hitting the Asylum, Coven, Freakshow, and Hotel. Though, it seems like, unlike AHS, the characters will remain the same.
At Season 1’s end, the remaining Chanels were locked in a mental institution, framed by killer Hester, (Michele). Curtis’s Dean Munsch remained on Campus. Could the institution be the hospital?
Scream Queens quickly became a favorite of mine for being unabashedly over the top. From Chanel’s (Roberts) bombastic rants and voracious insults, to the gory kills, no stone was left untouched. It truly was the wonderfully evil child of Glee and AHS. While not confirmed, it’s expected that Scream Queens Season 2 will have the same 13-episode structure as the first.
