J.K. Simmons is no stranger to comic book movies. The actor has appeared in all three of Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man films as the brash loud mouth editor-in-chief, J. Jonah Jameson. He reprised the character in the animated Ultimate Spider-Man series. But now, it looks like he will play a leader of a different sort. According to reports, the actor has signed on to play Commissioner James Gordon in Zack Snyder‘s Justice League: Part One.
More on the story below.
Simmons will join Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Ezra Miller, and Ray Fisher. With that roster, it looks like Green Lantern will be unavailable in the film for what THR vaguely describes as “a threat beyond each member’s capabilities.” According to Variety, Simmons’ role was the last one to be cast. The news may come as a disappointment to Spider-Man fans, some of whom have been petitioning to Sony to have the actor reprise his role in the reboot.
Considering how much Commissioner Gordon fully trusts the Batman throughout the comics, movies, and games, it’s not likely Simmons’ iteration of Commissioner Gordon will be as loud and brash as JJ.
Simmons won an Academy Award for his role as Terence Fletcher in Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash. He can be currently heard as Mayor Lionheart in Zootopia. His upcoming roles include La La Land, which reunites him with Chazelle; The Accountant, with Affleck; Kong: Skull Island with Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson; and The Snowman with Michael Fassbender.
Written by Chris Terrio (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Argo), Justice League: Part One is expected to start shooting this April. It’s slated for release on Nov 17, 2017, while Part Two will hit theaters on June 14, 2019. Snyder is only tapped to direct Part One, but that could all change depending on the success of that film. Of course, there is a chance that he might not return.
So expect more casting news to come in as we get closer to Dawn of Justice‘s release and Justice League‘s start date. Considering this will be the first time that we see Gordon in the new DCEU, it is likely that some parts of Justice League could take place in Gotham City.
The last time we saw the character on the big screen, he was in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, where he was played by Gary Oldman. Ben McKenzie currently plays Detective Gordon in Fox’s Batman prequel TV series, Gotham.
