AMC's Into the Badlands

Fans of one of the newest original series from The Walking Dead and Breaking Bad network AMC, Into the Badlands, have been anxiously awaiting word on whether or not there will be a second season to look forward to.

These days we often see new seasons ordered after the numbers are seen for the first episode or two—and sometimes even before a single episode has even aired—but not for Into the Badlands, despite it scoring the third-highest U.S. cable TV numbers of all time for a first season, helped along by its airing after episodes of the aforementioned Walking Dead. But thankfully AMC has decided, after this lengthy consideration period since the first season finale, that they will in fact be giving the show a season two.

Of the announcement, AMC, SundanceTV, and AMC Studios president Charlie Collier said:

“With its deep dive into authentic martial arts, the visually stunning Into the Badlands proved to be unlike anything else on television.Co-creators and showrunners Al Gough and Miles Millar, along with a talented team of producers, cast and crew, brought us an artfully crafted series.”

AMC surely gave fans a scare here but they actually very rarely cancel a series after only one season, having only done so twice in the past: 2010’s Rubicon and 2013’s Low Winter Sun.

There is a bit of bad news to go with the good news, though. The second season will only be 10 episodes—more than the first season but probably not as many as fans hoped it would get—and there’s going to be a lengthy wait involved as the new season won’t be arriving until sometime in 2017.

While Into the Badlands did draw some criticism for its storytelling, it offered a unique TV viewing experience set in an undeniably cool world crafted with post-apocalyptic, martial arts, and steampunk elements that most definitely made it worth watching. I, for one, am damn happy we’ll at least get a second season to see if it can kick things into another gear and win some new fans so it’s not as difficult to make a decision on season three.
