Last week on Once Upon A Time, our Storybrooke heroes traveled to the Underworld and were greeted by some old familiar faces. Regina (Lana Parilla) saw her mother, Cora (Barbara Hershey) and her dad, and her mom was still manipulating her do to evil rather than good. Regina remained a hero though. Gold (Robert Carlyle) ran into his dad, Peter Pan (Robbie Kay). Snow (Ginnifer Goodwin) got good and kissed by David’s twin James (Josh Dallas). Emma (Jennifer Morrison) got to see Neal (Michael Raymond-James), but only in a dream because he was in a better place. And we all met Hades (guest Greg Germann).

Spoilers below.

Once Upon A Time 5.13 “Labor Of Love” review: Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) is underground in Hades trapped by a beast, but he saves his cavern companion Meg (guest star Kacey Rohl), by offering a distraction. My hero! He got Emma’s message. And sends Meg with one of her own. He is a true hero now. Emma really has made him change to a better man, and he is totally worth this elaborate rescue.

Cerebrus – the mythical three headed dog-beast that guards the entrance to the underworld is running rampant. He was one of the 12 labors of Hercules, and it is the one that killed that demigod. Snow was friends with Hercules when they were kids. He died and is in the Underworld and happens to be her first crush. No wonder! Guest star Jonathan Whitesell (The 100) is quite handsome. He taught her how to shoot a bow and arrow to fight bandits, making her the hero she was. David was quite funny calling Herc “Muscles.”

Hercules: “If I hadn’t failed, I never would have figured out how to succeed.” I can see he taught her more than archery. Apparently he taught her those cheery hope speeches.

Robin and Henry go looking for maps in Regina’s bizarro house. t should be safe now that Cora is gone, but expectedly, it’s not. Cruella de Vil (Victoria Smurfit) is there and wants Henry to find the quill (it died so it’s down here), and bring her back to life. That will erase Emma’s murder of her – her darkness. Henry cannot resist.

Herc is afraid of Cerebrus and can’t fight it. Especially when Uncle Hades comes and taunts him a bit. The tables are turned and Snow vows to stand by him. They rope Meg in to stab one of the heads, and there is a mythical (and Disney) love connection as they skip off to Olympus.

Hades is pissed at losing his people, so decides that every time someone leaves, one of the Storybrookers must stay, and Hook has to pick.

I really enjoyed Mary-Margaret deciding to be Snow White, because MM is kinda boring and Mom-ish. It’s about time. I really like that her and Regina are besties now.

I never want them to leave the Underworld. I love stuff like this. Alice Through The Looking Glass is one of my favorite stories for the same reason. Next week it’s Gold vs. Hades and that should be a match!

Once Upon A Time airs Sunday nights at 8:00pm ET on ABC.

ABC’s synopsis:

In the Underworld, an escapee from Hades’ prison informs the heroes that Hook is being held captive. But before the heroes can rescue Hook, they must face a terrifying beast that guards the prison. Mary Margaret searches for an old childhood friend who knows how to defeat the monster. However, once reunited, she discovers that her friend is no longer the hero he once was. Meanwhile, in an Enchanted Forest flashback, a young Snow White struggles to preserve peace in her kingdom and must learn how to be a true hero if she wants to one day become queen.
