Back in 2001 a live-action TV series based on Ben Edlund‘s comic The Tick was made with Seinfeld, Family Guy, and The Emperor’s New Groove star Patrick Warburton playing the title role. The show aired on Fox and, as shows tend to do there, only lasted nine episodes (related note #1: Edlund also worked on that other show you think of when you think of Fox shows that were canceled too early, Firefly, writing the episodes “Trash” and “Jaynestown” and also producing). But even with its short run, the show has developed a cult following.

While that show isn’t coming back to life, Amazon has ordered a pilot episode for a potential brand new series based on Edlund’s Tick character. Nothing is official yet as far as getting a full series order, but an actor has been chosen to take over the role from Warburton. It’s being reported that comedian, actor, writer, and all-around talented gentleman Peter Serafinowicz will take on the title role for the pilot.

The reboot is bringing back the eponymous muscle-bound, antennae-sporting superhero (Serafinowicz). In the new incarnation, the blue-suited Tick is recovering from a memory loss and ends up reteaming with his sidekick Arthur (Griffin Newman) to fight evil. The two are surrounded by a new host of characters that include Arthur’s sister Dot (Valorie Curry).

Serafinowicz already has plenty of geek cred, making him an excellent choice for those excited about a new Tick show who can get past Warburton not being cast (related note #2: Warburton is expected to be an executive producer on this new version). He’s known for his work in Guardians of the Galaxy, NTSF:SD:SUV, The Peter Serafinowicz Show, Look Around You, and Shaun of the Dead, in which he played grumpy roommate Peeete. He also provided the voice for the best part of Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace: Darth Maul…something I for one was not aware of.

Edlund, who also created the ’01 live-action series and the 1994 animated series before that, will write and executive produce this latest adaptation. Another original executive producer in Barry Josephson and original studio Sony Pictures TV are also involved with the show.

Wally Pfister, who is best known for his work as a cinematographer on Moneyball and the films of Christopher Nolan including Memento, Insomnia, Batman Begins, The Prestige, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, and Inception, for which he won an Academy Award, is set to direct the pilot episode. He made his feature film directorial debut with 2014’s Transcendence.
