It’s been a little over a year since the impossible happened. Marvel fans couldn’t believe that Sony and Marvel Studios inked a deal that would allow them to share Spider-Man. The Webslinger makes his Marvel cinematic debut in Captain America: Civil War, which will then be followed by his own solo film that is said to have a John Hughes-vibe seeing that it would center on Parker balancing his time as a high school student and a superhero.
Soon, Sony would register a domain name that would be a reflection of that idea. Now, during their panel at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, Nevada, the studio has officially confirmed that the title of the Spider-Man reboot will be Spider-Man: Homecoming. More on the story below.
Tom Holland and Sony Pictures CEO Tom Rothman were present at the event to talk a little bit about the film that has yet to go into production. Holland opened with “I’m Tom Holland and I’m your new Spider-Man.” He later mentioned how the film would focus on the superhero and Peter Parker searching for their identity.
As the title suggests, the film will see Parker struggle with feeling conflicted between “saving the world and getting your homework done at the same time.”
The studio unveiled its first title, whose Spider-Man design looks like it was inspired by comic books and animated series, while the Homecoming design looks like something of a doodle you would see on a high school notebook, complete with the mask of Spider-Man on the second “o.”

The subtitle itself doesn’t tell us much. Some believed that Homecoming could be loosely based on the story arc where we saw Spidey, now wearing the alien symbiote suit known as Venom, returns home from the Secret Wars. However, seeing that Venom will probably not be a part of the Spider-Man franchise reboot, it’s not likely we will see that story in John Francis Daley and Jonathan M. Goldstein‘s script. But with the release of the reboot just a little over a year away, we will likely hear more about the film as it gets closer to the start of production.
Spider-Man: Homecoming opens in theaters on July 7, 2017.
