Last week, Once Upon A Time was full of betrayal and heartbreak. We got to see an Emma (Jennifer Morrison) origin story about how she became a bail bondsman, and acquired her signature red leather jacket. She also helped Hades (Greg Germann) get Zelena (Rebecca Mader) from Gold and Pan (Robert Carlyle and Robbie Kay), after they predictably tried to double-cross them. Since that didn’t work, Gold stole Robin Hood’s heart to give to his youthful father. That was a sham, as Gold double-crossed him and gave him a skin filled with water instead from the River of Souls. Hades took the names off of the tombstones, but the heroes couldn’t follow yet. That shared heart thing did not work because Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) was dead for too long. Hades told them how they could get their shot, but that was a dead end. Although it did prove their true love, there was no magic ambrosia left to help, and Emma had to leave him. It was all a setup. Also setup were the rest of them, trapped by Cruella and the blind witch. Emma was able to save the others and they all left the Underworld through the portal. Goodbye Hook.

Spoilers below.

Once Upon A Time 5.21 “Last Rites” review: Zelena is worried about her sister. She leaves the baby with Hades (what?) to smooth things over in Storybrooke. King Arthur (Liam Garrigan) runs into him and Hades kills him with the baby in his arms. Arthur runs into Hook (Hook!) in the Underworld, who explains the deal, and offers him a quest to find his “holy grail,” an answer to defeat Hades. They agree to work together and almost get taken out by dementors (excuse me, souls from the River of Souls). Hook manages to get the message to Emma through the Once Upon A Time book, that shows her the crystal that could destroy the heroes.

The heroes come back, and Regina tries to warn Zelena. Regina, that is not the approach. Zelena is like a 16-year old girl in love for the first time. She’s not going to listen to her sister about how bad her boyfriend is. Hades manipulates Zelena into getting ready to fight. And Robin is really upset with Regina (with good reason). But he forgives her. He’s a good guy. They talk about the future and go to get back that baby.

Emma is freaking out and all over the place because of losing Hook. Not for long, girl. Don’t worry.

The showdown happens – Zelena and Hades and Emma and Robin and Regina. Hades throws the crystal at Regina, but Robin jumps in front of it to his doom. Before Regina can even process this, Zelena holds the crystal and Regina and Hades fervently try to throw the other under the bus. Zelena makes her choice.

I am devastated. Two deaths – two real deaths. I only cared about Robin and it made me cry. So sad.

The moving on light shows up, but Arthur declines. He wants to fix the Underworld kingdom. Hook moves on alone and meets Zeus, who is there to take him where he belongs. Where do you think that is? That’s right! He’s back!

Pretty good episode – some things shocking and some things predictable. I really hope the finale is mindblowing!

Some thoughts:

– Cruella is so much fun with her man hungry comments (“stubble sandwich”).

– I think Robin is really staying dead. I’m really upset for Regina and myself. But I guess they have to let some people stay really gone. But that poor little boy, losing both his parents.

– Henry needs to start being a better writer.

– I like the idea of Arthur fixing the broken kingdom of the Underworld.

– Now that Hook is back, I want him front and center.

The two-part season finale of Once Upon A Time airs next Sunday night starting at 7:00pm ET on ABC.

ABC’s synopsis:

Emma, David, Regina, Robin and Henry are finally back home in Storybrooke and reunited with Snow, but, unfortunately, they still have to contend with Hades, who continues to deceive Zelena as he lays out his plan to use the all-powerful Olympian Crystal to take over the town. The heroes desperately search for a way to defeat Hades while Hook does the same in the Underworld, looking for those missing storybook pages. Regina and Robin take a more direct approach, which culminates in an epic showdown that will leave our heroes forever changed.
