X-Men

Since the release of X-Men: First Class, each installment of the X-Men film franchise has taken place in key moments in recent history. First Class took place during the Cuban Missile Crisis during the 1960s, Days Of Future Past occurred during the early 1970s, and Apocalypse will be during the 1980s. So it only seems fitting that the next X-Men film follows that theme by taking place in the 1990s, and that is what producer Simon Kinberg is confirming. More on the story here below.

Speaking to Coming Soon, Kinberg simply told the site:

“The next one is set in the ’90s.”

Not it is not clear if Kinberg is speaking about an actual X-Men film or one of the two spinoffs: Gambit, which stars Channing Tatum as the title character and will be directed by Doug Liman; and New Mutants, which is being helmed by Josh Boone.

Since the film will take place in the 90s, one can’t help but be reminded of the X-Men: The Animated Series that was broadcast on television during the early parts of that decade. Drawing inspiration from 1990s X-Men drawn by Jim Lee, the animated series saw a young X-Men team going on covert missions while also dealing with social issues. There is no doubt that the animated series helped spark an interest in the mutant superheroes as well as introduce more animated series based on Marvel heroes like Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, and Fantastic Four.

There is strong indication that Kinberg was speaking about New Mutants, which features a whole new team that consists of Magik, Wolfsbane, Dani Moonstar, Cannonball, Sunspot, and Warlock. The site adds Alexandra Shipp’s Storm (who makes her debut in X-Men: Apocalypse) and James McAvoy’s Professor Charles Xavier will play major roles in New Mutants, but that has yet to be confirmed by parties involved.

While it would be exciting to see a brand new team face a new mutant threat, it would be more of a nostalgic joy to see the team from X-Men: Apocalypse be in its follow-up. The animated series of the ’90s had episodes loosely based on storylines like “The Dark Phoenix Saga,” the “Phalanx Covenant,” and the “Legacy Virus.”

It will be a while before we find out whether the film that will take place in the ’90s will be about New Mutants or the X-Men we know now. But you can be sure we will share that announcement with you when it is made.

X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
