The cast of Blade Runner 2 has added another name. Mackenzie Davis, who appeared in Ridley Scott‘s The Martian and stars in the AMC series Halt and Catch Fire, has signed on for a role.
Davis joins original Blade Runner star Harrison Ford, who will reprise his role as Rick Deckard in the sequel, and fellow newcomer Ryan Gosling on the cast. Also starring is Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Ana de Armas, and Carla Juri.
Who Davis will be playing in Blade Runner 2, which doesn’t officially have a title yet, is unknown at the moment as details on the movie’s plot are being kept hush hush. All that is known so far is that Ford again plays replicant hunter Deckard and it will take place decades after the events of the original.
The Alcon Entertainment production is being directed by Denis Villeneuve, who previously helmed last year’s Sicario, which scored three Academy Award nominations, 2013’s Prisoners, which got one Oscar nomination, and 2013’s Enemy. It’s written by original co-writer Hampton Fancher and Michael Green, who is a creator and showrunner on Starz’s TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods and also worked on the screenplays for the next Wolverine movie and Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant, based on an idea from Fancher and Scott, who is producing.
Other titles Davis has starred in include Breathe In, What If, That Awkward Moment, Freaks of Nature and Always Shine. She can next be seen in Izzy Gets the F*ck Across Town.
The movie is getting ready to begin production next month, with an October 6, 2017 release date currently set. Alcon acquired the rights to continue the franchise back in 2011, more specifically the “film, television and ancillary franchise rights” to “produce prequels and sequels to the iconic science-fiction thriller,” so this could be just the start of multiple new stories set in that world.
