Walt DIsney Animation Studios

On Thursday, June 30th at 9am Pacific time, Walt Disney Animation Studios will be making a big mysterious announcement. Obviously, they are keeping things very vague until then, however, there are a few clues that have been laid out right in front of us that could tell us what the film could possibly be.

More on what the film could be below.

Here’s the official announcement which was made on Twitter earlier today:

So we know of at least three films that Disney has announced and confirmed. Moana has been in production for quite some time and is gearing up for the finish line when it is released in November of this year. It would be too early for us to see yet another trailer for the film considering one was released only a few weeks back. And I doubt they would make such an announcement for something like a featurette. However, the film has yet to announce other voice talents to join Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, Philipa Soo, and newcomer Auli’i Cravalho. But, then again, I’d like to think that Disney would reserve such an announcement for a much bigger occasion. So let’s move onto Gigantic.

Gigantic was announced mid-last year during the D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA. Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, the music team that brought us the Academy Award winning Frozen, would are returning to the Disney fold to write all new original songs. Director Nathan Greno (Tangled) and producer Dorothy McKim (Get A Horse!) are directing this new adaptation of Jack and the Beanstalk with a Spanish influence. We briefly saw a hint of this in the form of an Easter Egg during Zootopia as well.

Frozen 2 is supposedly going to start recording this year, with much of the original cast returning to reprise their respective roles. But again, Disney wouldn’t proclaiming that they were making a big announcement for a film that we already know is coming. So what could it be? Well let’s look at the schedule to help us out.

So far Walt Disney Animation only has a November 25, 2020 date marked on their calendar. As we have seen before, the animation studio has been doing pretty well for itself in that slot with films like Tangled, Frozen, and Big Hero 6 being hits with critics and audiences. But these films take time to create both on the animation and narrative front as well. As history tells us that these announcements are more than likely to be an original film or an adaptation (usually a fairy tale, childhood literary classic, or even a flavor of Marvel like Big Hero 6 was), with Frozen 2 being the clear exception to that rule. But if it is going to be a sequel it could very well be one for Wreck-It Ralph or Big Hero 6.

The latter certainly deserves a sequel, but there has been a call for a Wreck-It Ralph sequel for quite some time. Henry Jackman, the film’s composer, said the story to the sequel was in the works and John C. Reilly, the actor who voices the title character, reportedly was signed on for one. However, there hasn’t been anything of real substance. Even Rich Moore, the film’s director, couldn’t give us any news on Wreck-It Ralph 2. Here’s his quote when he spoke to us during the Zootpia Blu-ray press day:

“Well, it would be so great to do a Wreck-It Ralph 2. Beyond is it really happening, I can’t really say anything right now. Man that would be awesome. And if we did one, oh my God, it would be such a great movie. It would be so good.”

With Walt Disney now fully invested in making sequels to their animated hits, it should come as no surprise that Moore was not exactly willing to speak about the possibility of a sequel. It is not as though he denied that there was or was not going to be one.

One thing is for sure, we will keep you posted on what it is come tomorrow.

  1. It’s probably Ralph. Rich Moore retweeted the Disney Animation tweet.

  2. And now we know.. and turns out, it’s not even in 2020. Look at Disney, adding even more dates to the calendar to pick up the bumped Gigantic. At this point I expect a 2019 date to be added to accommodate Frozen 2. How fitting, WiR and Frozen were a year apart and now their sequels will be.
