Star Trek Beyond hits theaters this weekend and will make its big outdoor IMAX debut at the San Diego Comic-Con. As exciting as that sounds, it’s no surprise that Paramount Pictures would take this time to announced that there will be another sequel. It shows just how confident they are in Justin Lin‘s film. While we can speculate what happens in the sequel, the studio has confirmed that Chris Hemsworth will return to reprise his role as George Kirk, who was temporary captain of the doomed ship that was destroyed in the 2009 reboot, Star Trek.
More on the Star Trek 4 news here below.
Paramount sent out a press release today to the media confirming both the new sequel and Hemsworth’s reprisal. It’s still too early to reveal what we will see in it, but the statement said “in the next installment of the epic space adventure, Chris Pine‘s Captain Kirk will cross paths with a man he never had a chance to meet, but whose legacy has haunted him since the day he was born: his father.” The remaining cast is expected to return, with the exception of Anton Yelchin, who tragically on passed just weeks ago.
How this will happen is unclear. But more and more franchises are exploring time travel, so it is possible that the elder Kirk survived the events of the 2009 reboot. But your guess is as good as ours. However, the trailers have been hinting at how James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) has been feeling like he has been unable to live up to his father’s legacy. Beyond will put that belief to the test, but it looks like Star Trek 4 will push Kirk’s belief to the limit.
George Kirk was our introduction to Hemsworth. Although he appeared in the Star Trek reboot for a few minutes, it was more than enough to get him some major roles. After that, he took on Thor, the Asgardian God of Thunder, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the rest is history. The actor has shown us he is much more than just being a charming Avenger with muscles. In fact, he’s got a comedic side that we rarely see. Check out the new Ghostbusters if you need proof.
Now that Star Trek 4 is finally confirmed, we at least know that Star Trek Beyond is something worth watching, which this summer desperately needs as most sequels are falling short of expectations. No release date has been set, but we will keep you posted when Paramount makes the announcement.
