Great Detective Pikachu

When Legendary Pictures acquired the rights to make a Pokemon movie a month ago, it was following the successful launch of the mobile smartphone game Pokemon Go. Basically, the production company was taking advantage of the resurgence.

While the games provide a wealth of source material to work with, Legendary will not be using any of it. Instead, they will be making an adaptation of recent Japanese title Great Detective Pikachu. Now Guardians of the Galaxy writer Nicole Perlman and Gravity Falls animated series scribe Alex Hirsch are close to writing the adaptation. More on the story below.

Variety writes that Perlman and Hirsch have entered talks to write the script, which means they are probably pretty close to sealing the deal. The games and sequels follow the same premise of a trainer going on a journey to collect all species of Pokemon while earning the title of being the best battler. But since the film is based on Great Detective Pikachu, we will be getting something slightly different. Here is how the spinoff is described by Wikipedia:

The game follows a peculiar talking Pikachu who, despite not being as powerful and nimble as other Pikachu of his kind, is rather intelligent and claims to be a great detective. One day, Pikachu encounters a boy named Tim Goodman, who is able to understand what he is saying. Thus, the two begin working together to solve various mysteries revolving around Pokémon in the city.

Perlman is best known for coming from Marvel’s Screen Writing Program and writing the first draft of Guardians of the Galaxy. She then worked with Meg LeFauve on Captain Marvel, which recently cast Brie Larson as the title character. Hirsch is best known for his work on Gravity Falls, which is a beloved animated series that aired on Disney XD.

Other than the fact that the film adaptation will use Great Detective Pikachu as a basis, no other plot details were provided. So it should be interesting what the pair of screenwriters can come up with, and if it will be something that both the fans and general audiences can like.

Universal Pictures will handle distribution of the live-action film outside of Japan.

No word yet on when the film will be released, but we will keep you up to date on any more details when they come in.
