Jeremy Davies, who was on the TV series Lost and has a reoccurring role on FOX’s Sleepy Hollow, has landed the part of Jesus in the upcoming Starz television series American Gods.
That’s right, the big J. He’ll be on the TV show, although the character didn’t make it into the original printing of Neil Gaiman’s novel. The author had written a part where Jesus and Shadow meet, but eventually cut it, only to add it back in for the Author’s Preferred Text edition in the Appendix, where the author said the scene could be considered apocryphal (nice touch).
Here’s the official character description for Jesus, via EW:
“Resurrected on Ostara’s feast day, Jesus has always been generous in sharing the Easter holiday with the ancient goddess. But the overly empathetic Son of God would be crushed to know that Ostara harbors some deeply buried resentment over the issue.”
The goddess Ostara goes by Easter now that she’s in America, and as you can imagine, she’s not thrilled with Jesus jumping in on her special day. In the show, Kristin Chenoweth will play Easter, and you can see a photo of her donning her bonnet embedded here below, along with a set photo posted by Gillian Anderson, who plays Media.
Like Anderson, Davies was also a cast member on NBC’s Hannibal, which was developed by Bryan Fuller, who serves on Gods as co-executive producer along with Michael Green. Along with his Lost and Sleepy Hollow credits, Davies also starred on FX’s Justified (he won an Emmy for his role as Dickie Bennett) and will be a part of Showtime’s upcoming Twin Peaks revival.
Here’s an old photo of Davies with Bryan Fuller during Hannibal:
Here’s the official plot summary about the show from Starz:
The plot posits a war brewing between old and new gods: the traditional gods of mythological roots from around the world steadily losing believers to an upstart pantheon of gods reflecting society’s modern love of money, technology, media, celebrity and drugs. Its protagonist, Shadow Moon, is an ex-con who becomes bodyguard and traveling partner to Mr. Wednesday, a conman but in reality one of the older gods, on a cross-country mission to gather his forces in preparation to battle the new deities.
American Gods, which debuts on Starz in 2017, stars Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, Ian McShane as Mr. Wednesday, Emily Browning as Laura Moon, Crispin Glover as Mr. World, Cloris Leachman as Zorya Vechernyaya, Gillian Anderson as Media, Orlando Jones as Mr. Nancy, and Kristin Chenoweth as Easter.
