Crazed military men threatening worldwide annihilation”¦ The two biggest global superpowers threatening World War III”¦ A deranged madman with a doomsday device”¦ must be one the best damn comedies of all time! Thanks to Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies’ TCM Big Screen Classics series, Stanley Kubrick‘s classic satire Dr. Strangelove is returning to this theaters this month for a few screenings.

On Sunday, September 18th and Wednesday, September 21st, the film will play twice each day, at 2:00pm and 7:00pm (local times), in over 650 movie theaters nationwide, and feature a specially-produced commentary from TCM host Ben Mankiewicz.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb came out in 1964 and was Kubrick’s way of dealing with the absurdities of the Cold War and the paranoia engulfing the United States. At a time where the U.S. and Soviet Union were in an arms race and a space race, Kubrick co-wrote and directed this story about a renegade and psychotic U.S. general who initiates an attack on the Soviets because he fears they have infiltrated our water supply. What he doesn’t realize is that the bombing mission he ordered will trigger a Soviet doomsday device. Soon the American and Soviet governments are forced to work together to prevent mutually assured destruction. What follows is utter chaos featuring a beleaguered President, a crazy member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a bizarre German scientist who created the device.

Dr. Strangelove Peter Sellers

Dr. Strangelove was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Peter Sellers, who portrays three key roles, including the titular character. The film also features a variety of huge stars, from George C. Scott and Sterling Hayden to Slim Pickens and an early performance from James Earl Jones. Back in 1964, this fictional portrayal of Cold War craziness played on peoples’ fears. In the current political climate, one wonders what kind of amazing satire Kubrick could make today.

Fathom Events and TCM have joined to make continual fun and exciting experiences for the whole family. I recently took my wife to the comedy classic Animal House for the first time, and my entire family was able to relive the epic sci-fi film Planet of the Apes on the big screen. Last weekend, we introduced our son to one of our childhood favorites, The NeverEnding Story.

Dr. Strangelove is the first of two classic Kubrick films returning to theaters this Fall, as one of the scariest movies ever made, The Shining, is featured on October 23rd and 26th. Fathom Events also added a one-night only showing of Young Frankenstein, co-written and starring the late great Gene Wilder, Wednesday night, October 5th . You can get your tickets to Dr. Strangelove online at www.FathomEvents.com, and search the theaters listings for your area.

Special Fathom Feature: Unlock the secret codes and constant scheming of Dr. Strangelove with exclusive commentary from Turner Classic Movies host Ben Mankiewicz that helps decipher the many layers of satire in Stanley Kubrick’s masterpiece.

  1. That should say “US theatres” since it doesn’t seem to be listed as playing in any other country.
