Back in January of this year came the surprising reveal of 10 Cloverfield Lane, director Dan Trachtenberg’s super secret “blood relative” to producer J.J. Abrams 2008 hit Cloverfield. Abrams made it very clear, however, that the movie was not Cloverfield 2. The two were connected, but part of something much bigger.
Now that much bigger thing is beginning to become even more clear. It’s been revealed that a movie titled God Particle, which Abrams has been attached to as a producer for a while now, is another Cloverfield-related project. More info on the movie, what it’s about, and who stars, can be found below.
Basically, the movie is the third part in a developing shared universe. We’ve seen “shared universe” tossed around a lot lately as studios tried to replicate Marvel’s great success with the formula. This one is much different, developing in secret instead of making all plans known to the world from the start. That’s because it doesn’t have a bunch of high-profile individual characters coming together for a shared adventure from time to time. It’s simply different stories set in the same universe which share certain connections.
Whether God Particle will keep its title or change it to something with the Cloverfield name in it, such as The Cellar became 10 Cloverfield Lane, is unknown at the moment. What is known, is that the movie follows a group of astronauts who “make a shocking discovery and end up fighting for survival in what is described as an altered reality.”
Starring in the movie is David Oyelowo (Selma, Jack Reacher), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Concussion, Free State of Jones), Ziyi Zhang (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, House of Flying Daggers), Elizabeth Debicki (The Great Gatsby, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2), Daniel Brühl (Rush, Captain America: Civil War), and Chris O’Dowd (Thor: The Dark World, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children). It’s helmed by Nigerian-American director Julius Onah (The Girl Is in Trouble), from a screenplay written by Oren Uziel (22 Jump Street, Freaks of Nature) and Doug Jung (Star Trek Beyond, Confidence).
God Particle is scheduled to be released on February 24, 2017. Footage is being shown to reporters today in New York, and again at a similar event in Los Angeles on November 2nd. When we might see some of that or any footage is not yet known, but given the release date it will likely be fairly soon.
