Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is already one of the most anticipated films of the fall, and with the film’s release just a few short weeks away, it seems that the casting process isn’t quite finished yet.
According to new reports, Johnny Depp is set to appear in the film for a role that has yet to be revealed. But there’s more. While there will be four more Fantastic Beasts in the future, Depp will also appear in the sequel, which will be directed by David Yates. More on the story below.
Deadline was the first to report on the news, with THR’s Boyrs Kit following with supporting tweets. According to the report no one knows who Depp will be playing in the movies but can confirm that he will be appearing alongside Eddie Redmayne, who will also be reprising the lead role of Newt Scamander, the magizoologist whose work helped inspire the textbook that was first seen in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, in the sequel.
Of course just because we don’t know who Depp is playing doesn’t mean that there won’t be those who will speculate. Many people say he will be playing a young Grindelwald. For those that don’t know Grindelwald was considered to be one of the most powerful and dangerous dark wizards of all time, second only to Voldemort. Jamie Campbell Bower played a younger version of the character in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part I, while Michael Byrne played the older version. Hopefully we’ll get our answer when the film is released. Unless Yates will trick us with some vague answer.
Remember there are five Fantastic Beasts films planned, so we don’t know exactly how many more of those sequels Depp will appear in. He will start filming his expanded role with Redmayne starting next year for a November 16, 2018 release.
The first Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will hit on November 18.
