Star Wars: The Force Awakens is well behind us, but somehow we are still uncovering more secrets about the film. With Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them just a week away from release, Eddie Redmayne making the press rounds talking about his experience on the first of five Harry Potter spinoffs. But the actor reveals that he almost did not play Newt Scamander.
At first, the actor spoke about how he auditioned to play a baddie in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Specifically, General Hux, a role that eventually went to Domnhall Gleeson. Now it appears that story has changed, as he believes he actually auditioned to play Kylo Ren. Check out the full story below.
Redmayne spoke about his “failed” audition to Uproxx’s Mike Ryan. During the interview, he revealed that he was never given any lines from the actual movie but that they would tell him he was auditioning to play the “baddie.” Here’s the full quote:
So, I was going for, I think, for Adam Driver. They gave me like a Star Trek scene – or like something from Pride and Prejudice. It was one of those films. With films that top secret, they don’t give you the actual lines. So they give you a scene from Pride and Prejudice, but then they tell you you’re auditioning for the baddie. If you’re me, you then put some ridiculous voice on.That was really a hilarious moment. Because it was Nina Gold, who I have to thank a lot because she’s cast me in several films. And she was just sitting there and I was trying again and again with different versions of my kind of “koohh paaaah” [Darth Vader breathing sound] voice. And after like ten shots she’s like, “You got anything else?” I was like, “No.”
It’s not entirely uncommon for an actor who is auditioning for a role to get lines from a different film. Because The Force Awakens was still under development, it was best to keep plot details under wraps to prevent any leaks from happening. One thing is for sure, his best wasn’t exactly what J.J. Abrams and Lucasfilm were looking for.
While it would have been interesting to see a fine actor like Redmayne play the role of the villain, it’s hard to believe that he could pull off the kind of performance that Adam Driver had as Kylo Ren. The polarizing chemistry he had with Harrison Ford made us believe that the relationship between Kylo Ren and Han Solo was severally strained.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in theaters on November 18, 2016.
