Spoilers below for Ash vs Evil Dead

Last week on Ash vs Evil Dead: It’s hard to even type this”¦ but Pablo (Ray Santiago) is dead. After Ash (Bruce Campbell) played Baal by acting all psycho-slasher last week, Pablo used the power of the Necronomicon that was inside him to banish Baal (Joel Tobeck) once and for all. But not before Baal let loose one last swipe with his raptor-like talon, slicing poor Pablo in half. I nearly cried at everyone’s reaction, especially Kelly (Dana DeLorenzo) who went through another hellish episode. The range of emotions was crazy as she killed a teenage girl demon, confessed that killing to the girl’s mother, fought off the perverted puppet of Ashy Slashy, before having to watch her bestie and fellow Ghostbeater die a hero. I don’t know what AvED can do to top that episode, and frankly, I’m scared to find out how they try.

This week, on Episode 2.9 “Home Again,” everyone handles death in their own way. Ash handles death by getting drunk and burning rubber in the Delta with Pablo’s corpse while smoking angel dust. Pablo’s body tells him he should go back in time and fix things. Ash, high as a kite and drunk as a skunk, tells him if he can change one thing it would ever touching the Necronomicon back in the cabin. Well Pablo’s body is still technically the book, and Ash knows from experience that reading it can sure take you places, so he gathers the grieving girls and we get an epic drunken rambling before Ash pulls a Back to the Future; when this baby careens wildly down the street going over 100 mph, you’re gonna see some serious shit.

Kelly sums it up best: “What in the actual F*CK?!” That’s right, it’s back to 1982. Journey, pinball, fundraiser carwashes, ah the good ol times. They head to the cabin but the Evil Dead is in pursuit. Ash makes it back to the cabin”¦ “My old mistress in the woods”¦ this is our last tango.” He steps on a nail which causes his leg to become infected by something dark, a la Evil Dead 2“¦ then it’s full on Army of Darkness as he battles something evil inside of him, which of course leads Ash to beat the hell out of himself first.

Meanwhile, Kelly and Ruby (Lucy Lawless) are in the woods. Ruby tries to tell Kelly that this is almost over and she can forge her own path. Kelly’s response to this is great. They sense something is following them and of course, it’s the woods themselves and we get a great scene of the trees attacking them. Back at the cabin, Ash goes into the basement to find the book but find Henrietta chained to the wall. She tells him her husband, Dr. Knowby”¦ names familiar to anyone who has seen the films, went crazy but Ash doesn’t buy it.

Soon the good doctor returns with a cute student to help translate the book. Tanya (Sara West) sees Henrietta and steps back into a bear trap. Ash frees Henrietta from the chain and goes after the professor, but it’s too late as Henrietta was chained up due to being possessed by the Necronomicon. The episode ends on a cliffhanger with Ash and Tanya trying to escape the Henrietta monster (Ted Raimi).

This episode was another great one and a total ode to the fans of the films. From the time they got to the 80s, it was like bouncing between the trilogy with various moments paying specific homage, like the little deadite inside of Ash, to Henrietta, to the trees going after the girls in the woods. As usual my only complaint is the episode was too short and now there’s only one left. Ash, Ruby, and Kelly are set for an epic battle against the Necronomicon one more time, and should they be victorious we might see Pablo return.

The season finale of Ash vs Evil Dead hits Starz next Sunday night.
