Horror is this “it” thing on TV right now, and horror-comedy is even better. Ash vs. Evil Dead just wrapped a second great season on Starz, and has already been renewed for season 3. Scream Queens is blending horror and insane comedy on FOX Tuesday nights. This fall, IFC joined the party with Dana Gould’s Stan Against Evil which premiered in early November. I watched the pilot back at NYCC in October and it instantly hooked me. Stan is played by John C. McGinley who brings the same rough sarcasm he did as Dr. Perry Cox on Scrubs only this time with a shade of melancholy. The show ran a limited run of 8 half hour episodes, run back to back for four straight weeks. IFC has just renewed Stan for a second season.
More below.
According to Deadline, Stan Against Evil raked in an impressive 679,000 for its premiere, making it IFC’s highest rated new show in since late 2015. Stan also benefitted from DVR, doubling its audience every week. “That amazed me” Gould said. The show takes place in Willard’s Mill, New Hampshire where Stan is the police chief. Stan’s beloved wife passed away on leaving him a shell of his former self who has to deal with his awkward daughter, Denise (Deborah Baker Jr) alone. That and he loses his job as sheriff… to a woman (Janet Varney). What Stan and company don’t know if that his wife was a demon hunter keeping a 200+ year curse at bay. Now they must use her demon killing handbook to battle all the agents of evil out to get them.
Stan Against Evil was a fun, bloody, and surprisingly heartfelt show that just breezes by. You can catch up on season 1 of Stan over at IFC.
