Rogue One: A Star Wars Story officially hits theaters today (check out our review here), and depending on whether or not you have seen it, it could change the way we see Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones).
While we’ve heard Kathleen Kennedy say that this is just one standalone film, the actress is under contract to appear in one sequel. Before we can speculate how she will appear, we have to warn you that MAJOR SPOILERS will follow after the jump. I repeat, MAJOR SPOILERS are ahead, so you’ve gotten your warning.
Okay, so we all know that the Rogue One crew were able to steal the plans to the Death Star, as noted by what happens in A New Hope. But because this was the untold story of the theft, we didn’t know how it played out. Well let’s just say that no one makes it out alive. That’s right, the entire team dies but not before they could successfully transmit the data schematics of the Death Star to the Rebels. So any direct sequel is not possible. Especially since the third act basically leads up to A New Hope. That being said, THR has word that Jones has a sequel option in her contract.
In addition, the Kennedy’s statement, reps for various cast members have gone on record saying Lucasfilm told them there won’t be a sequel. The fact that the film ends the way it does is pretty much the nail in the coffin. So how is it possible for a dead character to appear in a sequel. Well, maybe she won’t be in a sequel. Maybe another spinoff. Based on THR’s report, there is a possibility that she could appear in a young Luke Skywalker stand-alone in the future. However, they stress that this is just speculation.
Which we hope is just speculation. Let’s not forget that before Luke Skywalker became a Jedi, and before he joined the Rebel Alliance, he was just sipping on blue milk and working on his aunt and uncle’s moisture farm. He led a pretty boring life, unless you count shooting womp rats as exciting.
So take the possible sequel news as you will. Whether or not Jyn will appear in a sequel or another spinoff is unclear. But it should be exciting to see if it does happen, and hopefully she appears in the right film.
