Last time on Supernatural, an angel-killing lady started taking out some of Castiel’s (Misha Collins) winged associates. He met two of them, and Dean and Sam (Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki) tagged along. One then died at the hands of Lily Sunder (Alicia Witt), but they saved Ishim. The whole sordid story came out. Ishim was really a douche who was obsessed with Lily. So angry that she had taken up with another angel, he killed her angel husband and human child, lying to his brethren that the child was a nephilim. He also thought humans were animals. She bided her time and studied angel magic until she was powerful enough to kill him. Castiel ended up killing Ishim to save them all and to atone for his part in it.

Spoilers below.

Supernatural 12.11 “Regarding Dean” review: A witch put a purple light spell on Dean while he was hunting him. He woke up with a broken phone and no idea what happened. Sam thinks he is acting weird with good reason. He forgot about the current case for a moment and then was slapped by a girl for a mystery reason. He’s queasy at the sight of blood.

Dean: “Who’s Dean?” He forgot for one second.

Time to call a witch for a witch problem – Rowena (Ruth Connell). She says to kill the witch who did the hexing. Dean has to retrace his forgetful steps. They end up in a burger bar, and there is the girl that slapped him. They “blew off some steam,” but now she feels bad because she thinks he was roofied. Luckily there are security cameras.

“It’s like watching myself on Netflix.” They see the witch and look for him. Dean is having a blast hearing about their life with real monsters and being bffs with angels. They stumble upon the witch. He is already dead, and Dean is not cured. Rowena to the rescue. Dean will die soon – he will forget how to live. The witches grimoire is needed.

Sam busts into the witches lair, while Rowena babysits Dean. It was a trap. Siblings of the dead witch are trying to resurrect him. Rowena battles one of them, and Dean rescues both of them with the help of post-it notes (almost killing Sam by not recognizing him).

Rowena fixed Dean, and they owe her one. Although it was nice to not have the burden of remembering all the stuff he lost, he forgot the good times too.

A simple episode, “Regarding Dean” was nice seeing Ackles not act like cynical Dean for a bit, while conveying the regression. The witch family were a bit over the top (aren’t they always?). Connell always steals the show when she is on, especially with this softer side of her towards the boys. She can still give it evil style to the enemy, which is fun. I often like the “one and dones” the best, and this was no different. With barely any mention of Lucifer’s impending offspring, it almost felt like we were losing a bit of our memory as well. I liked that symmetry. The one brother is dying bit is a bit stale, but hey… it’s worked thus far – season 13!

Supernatural airs Thursday nights at 8:00pm ET on The CW.
