Today marks the start of production for The Predator, the fourth installment of the Predator film franchise. Director Shane Black, who also starred in the first Predator, marked the occasion by releasing an image on his Twitter account, and confirmed that his film will be rated R. More on the story below.
The plot of The Predator is currently under wraps, but seeing as though the film will be rated R, we can expect to see some very graphic violence. Which is fine, because as Black so eloquently put it in an earlier tweet, “PG-13 is for pussies.”
In an interview with producer John Davis, the film will have a refreshing take on the franchise:
“Shane shot a movie and he’s doing a pilot now, but I’ve read a lot of his script and I think it’s genius. I think it’s genius and I think it’s entertaining, and what it did is recreate a famous franchise in a different, interesting way; looking at it from a different light. He’s just an amazing writer-director. He’s got a way of looking at this that makes you excited again. I love this franchise. It was the first movie I ever did. I remember in being in the jungle with Arnold [Schwarzenegger] as a 28-year-old and going, “˜This is a fun business!'”¦Shane’s amazing. He’s an amazing storyteller.”
In an interview with We Got This Covered, Boyd Holbrook (Logan) not only echoed those sentiments, but also added that the film would not be a sequel:
“I’m currently working on Predator. It’s not a sequel; Shane Black has made something totally new, somehow keeping within the realm of Predator [while also being] absolutely new in terms of the story that we’re talking about today, and rooted in something real. It’s real fresh. I don’t think you’re going to see [Arnold] Schwarzenegger. It would kind of make it a gimmick. It’s horror, science-fiction and a western.”
The Predator stars Olivia Munn (X-Men: Apocalypse), Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Keegan-Michael Key (Keanu), Thomas Jane (The Punisher), Sterling K. Brown (The People vs. O.J. Simpson). Room breakout star Jacob Tremblay also has an undisclosed role in the film.
The Predator opens in theaters on February 9, 2018.
