Last week on The Flash, Grodd (David Sobolov) and his army came to Earth-1 from a breach that Gypsy (Jessica Camacho) made because of mind control. Although it looked completely hopeless that Barry (Grant Gustin) could defeat him without killing him, both Iris and Harry (Candice Patton, Tom Cavanagh) pep-talked him into another way. That way? Tagging Solovar (Keith David) in to defeat Grodd and take the army back to Earth-2. Jesse (Violett Beane) decided to stay on Earth-1 with Wally (Keiynan Lonsdale) and give it a go. Gypsy smooched Cisco (Carlos Valdes) goodbye.
Spoilers below.
The Flash 3.15 “The Wrath of Savitar” review: Wally is training with Barry and Jesse… and he did it! He got the speed! But he is still having visions of Savitar. Julian (Tom Felton) returns from his trip and it is adorably awkward between him and Caitlin (Danielle Panabaker).
Iris and Barry announce their engagement (and by announce, I mean by holding up a ring). Joe (Jesse L. Martin) is crying, and Cisco is the best man. Joe is a little puzzled because Barry did not ask his permission (there was a story). Come on, Joe. You were going to say yes. Give the kids a break.
They respond to a fire and Wally sees Savitar, who tosses him around a little. Barry is puzzled because there’s nothing there, and Wally blurts it out. He’s just messing with his mind. Barry wants Wally gone, and wants Julian to go under.
Julian: “I choose to decline.” Caitlin says to trust that she will still be able to see the real him, so he kisses her. Well done! Julian makes Caitlin more interesting.
Savitar calls Barry the “Big Bad.” And scares the “bejeezus” out of everyone. The clues?
– Barry is there when he is created.
– Iris has to die because it is her or him.
– He questioned whether they got rid of the Philosopher’s Stone (Harry Potter).
– Future Barry trapped him where he is.
Wally and HR practice running and talk. HR: “Are you picking up what I’m putting down?” He certainly is. Cisco reluctantly vibes Wally to the future. He sees the whole thing. When he comes back, he makes Barry admit that he proposed because she wasn’t wearing a ring in the future. The cryptic stone mystery comes out.
Caitlin: “I’m the one who betrayed everyone.” She kept a piece of the stone in hopes Julian could help her get rid of her powers. Julian is pissed. My how the tables have turned! Julian lives in a glass house, I see.
Joe goes to Iris to convince her with his dad powers to forgive and understand Barry.
Jesse consoles Wally. “She’s right, Wally. You’re not alone,” says Wally’s dead mom. Wait. What? It’s just Savitar messing with him again. Wally goes to stop him. And does the exact opposite of what he should.
Iris and Barry talk. She thought the proposal was born of love “not fear.” So she gives back the ring. Dumb.
Turns out that Savitar is in the speed force and Caitlin did the right thing by keeping a piece of the stone. Wally took it and was tricked into putting it into the speed force, and he got sucked in. Savitar escapes. Wally is gone. They fight. Savitar stabs him, but lets him live… so he can see Iris die pretty soon. Cisco thinks he can do something with the piece of Savitar that was left inside Barry. I really hope so, Cisco.
This was a really sad episode. I love Wally and the cheerfulness and optimism he brings to the team. To see it snuffed out with little hope of rescue. Barry has to save him, of course. Is the best dad ever, Joe West, going to lose 2 kids?
Who is Savitar? I randomly shout names at the screen – Julian, Thawne, I thought Wally for a minute. It’s killing me.
My favorite part – HR comforting Jesse.
The Flash airs Tuesday nights at 8:00pm ET on The CW.
