Fates Warning Awaken the Guardian Live banner

Last year marked the 30th anniversary of Fates Warning’s third album, the progressive metal masterpiece Awaken the Guardian. In celebration of the occasion last year, founding (and current) guitarist Jim Matheos reassembled the album’s classic line-up, including singer John Arch, for two festival shows. Now, the entire recordings from those shows have been compiled for an upcoming CD/DVD and Blu-ray titled Awaken the Guardian Live, and Metal Blade Records has released a preview of it.

Check out the preview of the upcoming live release (video and streaming audio) here below of the song “Fata Morgana.”

The Awaken the Guardian Live Blu-ray and 2-CD/1-DVD are available now for preorder now, and will released on April 28, 2017. Metal Blade is also offering some limited edition variations.

The performances for the upcoming release were taken from the Keep It True XIX festival recorded on April 30th, 2016 in Lauda-Konigshofen, Germany, and the Prog Power USA festival recorded on September 9th, 2016 in Atlanta, GA. The reunion lineup included John Arch on vocals, Jim Matheos on guitars, Frank Aresti on guitars, Steve Zimmermann on drums, and Joe DiBiase on bass.

In a statement through Metal Blade, Awaken the Guardian vocalist John Arch said the following about the experience:

“It was truly a surreal experience being able to share the spirit of ‘Awaken The Guardian’ at these shows. We would like to take this opportunity to thank all the fans that have given back so much over the 30 year span since the album’s release. To all our family and friends, much gratitude.”

Ok, so that I’ve given you the pertinent details and a way to check out the preview, please allow me to say FUCK YEAH and HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am beyond excited about this upcoming release. When I saw the press release in my email box this morning, I had to rub my eyes a few times and then pinch myself, even after hitting play on the streaming audio. Could this be real? Hearing this is a dream come true for me. Awaken The Guardian is one of my favorite metal albums from the 1980s, and has been in heavy rotation on my playlist for decades. Way back when before MP3 players, you had to carry around portable cassette and then later CD players, which meant you had to carefully select which albums to carry around with you. For a long time, that album for me was Awaken The Guardian. It’s not only progressive metal at its finest, but it’s a perfect album — not a dud on it. Guardian is the band’s third album and its last with singer John Arch, before they continued on with singer Ray Alder (the band has been active all these years and still are). While they are still a great band, oh man have I missed John Arch (that voice!!!) and all of that line-up together. I seriously cannot wait to get my hands on Awaken the Guardian Live.
