Yes, Suicide Squad was one of the most polarizing films of 2016, but its box office success was enough to warrant the obvious sequel. But with writer and director David Ayer moving on to helm Gotham City Sirens, Suicide Squad 2 is in need of a writer and director.
There is a rumor that the studio is eyeing Mel Gibson to direct, though we have yet to hear about it from either party. However, there is confirmation that The Legend of Tarzan scribe Adam Cozad is in talks to pen the script. Yeah, the sequel doesn’t sound promising, at all. More on the story below.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cozad has just entered negotiations to write the script for the sequel. For those who don’t know, Cozad wrote the scripts for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit and The Legend of Tarzan. Both films were critically panned, though to be fair both did get better reviews than Suicide Squad. I’m trying to find the silver lining.
On the upside, there is a chance that WB could bring in another writer to assist Cozad, or the studio could just hand it off to the director. So don’t be surprised to see one or both situations happening. Of course, the studio could just opt to scrap it altogether. But that is just speculation on my part. Still, Cozad’s hiring doesn’t give me much confidence in the sequel.
Not that the first Suicide Squad was any good. The film was criticized for being poorly edited and chock full of underdeveloped characters. Based on the marketing alone, many called the film an awful version of Guardians of the Galaxy. Still, the film managed to win an Academy Award for Best Makeup. But most importantly, it grossed $745 million worldwide.
Cozad’s other credits include Underwater, a Fox actioner starring Kristen Stewart; Bloodshot, the adaptation of the Valiant comic book; and The Gray Man, a spy thriller starring Charlize Theron.
No word yet on who will return for Suicide Squad 2 or when it will be released. But we will keep you posted on any developments about the sequel.
