Albus Dumbledore is a fixture in the Harry Potter mythology but was only mentioned by name in the prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. However, the character was bound to show up given his relationship with Grindelwald (Johnny Depp).
Now we know who will be playing him in Fantastic Beasts 2. New reports confirm that Jude Law will be the one to cast the spells as a young Dumbledore. More on the story below.
The Hollywood Reporter was the first to confirm the news. According to their report, director David Yates‘ sequel will also see the return of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne), Porpentina Goldstein (Katherine Waterston), Queenie Goldstein (Alison Sudol), and Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler). Fantastic Beasts 2 will follow the foursome as they head off to Paris for all new adventures. The script will be written by J.K. Rowling who made her screenwriting debut writing the first Fantastic Beasts films.
Dumbledore and Grindelwald’s relationship was never fully explored in the main Harry Potter films, though we do know that their relationship went far beyond friendship. While the two had plans to change the wizarding world of magic for the greater good, it was deemed too ambitious by their peers. Still, that didn’t stop the two from proceeding with their plans. Dumbledore grew to have feelings for Grindelwald, but they were never reciprocated. Eventually, there would be a fallout between the two that involved the death of Dumbledore’s sister. The Fantastic Beasts films will supposedly tell the story of how that relationship deteriorated.
Here’s Rowling hinting at how the complex relationship will affect Dumbledore in the sequel:
“You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man. We’ll see him at that formative period of his life.”
So it should be interesting to see how the magizoologist fits into all of this and what his role in finding more fantastic beasts will do for the future of the mythology.
You can next see Jude Law in Guy Ritchie’s stylized retelling of the tale of King Arthur in King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.
The tentatively titled Fantastic Beasts 2 is scheduled to hit theaters on November 16, 2018. The movie will be the second installment of a five-film franchise.
