Mother Goose is real. Although that should not surprise Eve Baird and her team of ragtag genius librarians, they are still able to muster some disbelief at some of the cases that the Clippings Book hands them. Three inexplicable events happen in separate areas of the world: a woman gets trapped inside a pumpkin, 3 giant rodents with no eyes attack a woman, and a man gets caught up in a fierce wind which catches him up into the sky, until he lands on a trampoline. What do these three people have in common? They appropriately lived through some real life nursery rhymes, appropriate since they are direct descendants of the real Mother Goose.

Such is the hook that ensnares us in The Librarians and The Mother Goose Chase By Greg Cox.

Mother Goose is not one person, rather one person at a time. The nursery rhymes were actually a book of powerful spells, so powerful, that the real tome was split in three to contain it, and a treaty made. But the treaty was broken. Jake Stone, Ezekial Jones, and Cassandra Cillian are on the hunt for the 3 pieces, while Baird splits her time helping Jenkins corral errant Library treasures, and figure out what happen to Flynn Carsen, who disappeared without a trace. If they can’t stop this mayhem, the universe itself may unravel.

Greg Cox has written another winner with this second effort. His ability to pluck the characters off the screen and into his novels, combining that with unique and zany missions, embodies the John Rogers creation. His descriptions allow you to visualize everything perfectly.

You do not have to read the first book or watch the show (although I highly recommend it) to enjoy this fast read, as there is enough in the brief backstory to get right to the action. The pages flew by like your very own Clippings Book. Such fun!

Cox’s third effort, The Librarians and the Pot of Gold, will be released on February 6th, 2018. No synopsis yet, but do I see leprechauns in the Library’s future?

Greg Cox has written several original Star Trek novels, including a trio of books on Khan Noonien Singh. Also, he penned novelizations for The Dark Knight Rises, Daredevil, Man of Steel, Godzilla, and the Underworld film series, and spin-off titles for other licensed properties.

Official Synopsis:

The Librarians and the Mother Goose Chase, an original novel based on the hit television show, The Librarians by New York Times bestselling author, Greg Cox.

For millennia, the Librarians have secretly protected the world by keeping watch over dangerous magical relics. Cataloging and safeguarding everything from Excalibur to Pandora’s Box, they stand between humanity and those who would use the relics for evil.

Stories have power.

In 1719, Elizabeth Goose published a collection of rhyming spells as a children’s book, creating a spellbook of terrifying power. The Librarian of that age managed to dispose of all copies of the book except one, which remained in the possession of Elizabeth Goose and her family, temporarily averting any potential disaster.

Now, strange things are happening around the world. A tree-trimmer in Florida is blown off his elevated perch by a freak gust of wind, a woman in rural Pennsylvania is attacked by mutant rodents without any eyes, and a college professor in England finds herself trapped inside a prize pumpkin at a local farmer’s market. Baird and her team of Librarians suspect that the magic of Mother Goose is again loose in the world, and with Flynn AWOL”•again”•it is up to Cassandra, Ezekiel, and Stone to track down the missing spellbook before the true power of the rhymes can be unleashed.
