Jeff Goldblum Set To Return As Dr. Ian Malcolm In ‘Jurassic World 2’

Jeff Goldblum as Dr. Ian Malcolm

A familiar face is set to return to the Jurassic Park franchise.

It’s being reported that Jeff Goldblum, who played Dr. Ian Malcolm in the 1993 original and its sequel, The Lost World: Jurassic Park, is set to return as the character once again in the upcoming fifth movie in the series, Jurassic World 2.

Goldblum’s Ian Malcolm is a mathematician who, in the first movie, is brought to the island of Isla Nublar with Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) and Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) to confirm to the investors—who were feeling a bit uncertain after the death of a handler at the razor-sharp teeth and claws of a Velociraptor—that the park of cloned dinosaurs John Hammond (Richard Attenborough) and his company InGen had created was perfectly safe for the public to visit. Things, of course, did not go well.

1997’s The Lost World is set on another island, Isla Sorna, where Hammond and InGen first created the dinosaur clones before bringing some of them to Isla Nublar to open Jurassic Park. The dinosaurs remaining on the island made it their own, but Hammond’s nephew (Arliss Howard), now running InGen, wants to bring some of them back to the mainland as an attraction at a park in San Diego. Malcolm understandably wants nothing to do with any of this when Hammond tries to convince him to go there as part of a team to document the dinos in hopes of raising a public outcry over InGen trying to capture and remove the animals. But Malcolm, quite familiar with unpredictability, has no choice but to go when he learns that his girlfriend Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore) has already gone to the island. Things, again, don’t go so well.

It will have been 21 years since Dr. Ian Malcolm has been seen on the big screen (that’s right, folks, The Lost World is about to be old enough to legally drink…*faints*) when Jurassic World 2 hits theaters next year. What we don’t know yet, unfortunately, is what he’ll be up to in the latest entry and how big or small his role will be.

What we do know is that the movie is being directed by J.A. Bayona (A Monster Calls, The Orphanage), with the script written by Jurassic World and Star Wars: Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow and writer Derek Connolly.

Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard both return for the follow-up. Also starring will be Justice Smith, James Cromwell, Ted Levine, Toby Jones, Rafe Spall, and Goldblum’s fellow original Jurassic Park castmate, BD Wong.

Goldblum can next be seen in Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok later this year. Click right here for more on Jurassic World 2, including the first official image.

Now we just need Sam Neill to sign on so we can get a sequel to this masterpiece:
