Last year’s Deadpool movie proved that the fourth wall breaking Merc with a Mouth could work on the big screen. Since the film was such a huge success, it’s really no surprise that fans would want to see more of the character. While a sequel is already in the works, FXX and Marvel are teaming up to bring Deadpool right to our televisions in a new animated series.
That’s just the tip of it. Atlanta producers Donald Glover and Stephen Glover will be acting as showrunners, executive producers, and writers on the untitled series. More on the story below.
In an announcement made on Marvel.com, the untitled Deadpool animated series will make its debut in 2018.
Here’s what Nick Grad, President of FX Original Programming, had to say about the new series:
“Donald Glover is an incredibly gifted and versatile artist who’ll bring the untitled Marvel’s Deadpool series to life with the same intense, singular vision as his breakout hit Atlanta. With the success of Legion, we’re looking forward to again partnering with Marvel Television to create a series that is bold, striking and entirely original.”
That is very true. Atlanta is one of FX’s biggest hits, and has been touted as one of the most critically acclaimed new shows of 2016. Since its debut, the show has won a handful of awards from the Golden Globes, DGA, WGA, and more. No doubt the success of Legion gave FX the confidence it needs to air the series on its sister network FXX.
Marvel Entertainment’s Jeph Loeb added:
“How much more fun could this be? Deadpool, Donald and FX – the perfect fit for the Merc with the Mouth! We’re thrilled that our relationship with FX that started with Legion continues with what is sure to be a groundbreaking show in adult animation.”
The press release didn’t reveal much else about the show other than it will be an animated adult action-comedy TV series adaptation of the hit Marvel character. We probably can expect something in the same vein of Archer in terms of action and violence. But as to the style, cast, and if it will connect to any of 20th Century Fox’s Marvel Television properties, currently airing or in the works, that remains to be seen. But considering that this is Deadpool we are talking about, I wouldn’t put it passed anyone to make some sort of snarky joke about not being connected due to budgets or contracts.
