Powers Boothe

The great Powers Boothe, known for his many memorable performances in films like Tombstone and Sin City and television shows like Deadwood and 24, has passed away at the age of 68.

A spokesperson for the actor, Karen Samfilippo, confirmed the news, saying he passed away in his sleep due to natural causes.

Samfilippo confirmed Boothe’s passing with this statement:

“Unfortunately it is true. Powers died in his sleep this morning of natural causes. There will be a private service held in Texas where he was from. A memorial celebration in his honor is being considered for a future date. Donations can be made to the Gary Sinise Foundation, which honors the nation’s defenders, veterans, first responders, their families and those in need.”

Boothe’s acting career began in 1977 with Neil Simon’s The Goodbye Girl, and he was always especially brilliant in villainous roles. As mentioned above, his best known film work includes Tombstone, in which he played Curly Bill, and the comic book movie Sin City, playing Senator Roark. Other credits include Southern Comfort, Red Dawn, The Emerald Forest, Extreme Prejudice, Rapid Fire, Blue Sky, Sudden Death, Nixon, U Turn, Men of Honor, Frailty, MacGruber, The Avengers, and Sin City sequel A Dame to Kill For.

On the television side of things he played Cy Tolliver on HBO’s western drama Deadwood, and Vice President Noah Daniels on 24. Boothe also appeared in the Hatfields & McCoys miniseries, Nashville, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. playing Gideon Malick, which is listed as his final acting role.

Marvel’s The Avengers and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. aren’t the end of his work in the realms of superheros. Boothe did some voice acting, including the animated series Justice League and Justice League Unlimited voicing Gorilla Grodd, and as Lex Luthor in the animated feature Superman: Brainiac Attacks. He provided voices for video games Area 51, Turok, and Hitman: Absolution as well.

Boothe won a Primetime Emmy for his work playing Jim Jones in the 1980 TV movie Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones.
