Another name has joined the cast of Fox’s X-Men spinoff X-Men: The New Mutants. Or just New Mutants. No one seems to know for sure. IMDb has it as the former. The trades seem to like the latter. Apparently we get to call it whatever we like. Personally, I’m going to call it Boo! A Madea X-Men Spinoff. Y’know, because it’s said to be a horror.
Anyway, getting back on track. It’s being reported that Stranger Things star Charlie Heaton is in negotiations for a role in the spinoff. He joins the previously cast Anya Taylor Joy, Maisie Williams, and Rosario Dawson on the movie.
Heaton is in talks for the role of Sam Guthrie, who’s able to propel himself through the air and is impervious to any incoming attacks while doing so, giving him the name Cannonball.
Taylor-Joy is set to play Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, who has sorcery skills and is able to teleport to different locations. Williams will play Rahne Sinclair, who goes by the name Wolfsbane, a girl struggling to exist with both her religious beliefs and her ability to change into a wolf. Finally, Dawson will be a mentor to the younger characters, a medical doctor who has the ability to create a protective biofield around herself.
New Mutants is set to be directed by Stuck in Love and The Fault in Our Stars director Josh Boone, who also penned the screenplay along with Knate Lee. Of this unique tone of this X-Men spinoff, Boone described it as “a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes.”
Other characters that will be cast in the coming weeks include an alien named Warlock, a Native American named Danielle Moonstar, and a Brazilian ladies man named Sunspot. Entertainment Weekly says Teen Wolf and 13 Reasons Why star Henry Zaga is up for the role of Sunspot, though this doesn’t appear to be confirmed just yet.
In New Mutants, the mutants will find themselves being held against their will in a secret facility, where they struggle with the dangers of their abilities and the sins of their past.
The movie currently has an April 13, 2018 release date locked in, and filming is expected to begin next month in Boston.
